An inside look at the new Ford Maverick
New vehicle to go on sale this Fall
On Tuesday, Ford caught the attention of the automotive world by rolling out a new, smaller-sized Maverick pickup truck.
The new Ford Maverick dramatically breathes new life into an old name.
For starters, its four doors provide access to five seats, it has a range of 500 miles as it comes with a standard hybrid engine.
You'll have to order a gas engine if you want one to allow 40 miles per gallon all starting under $20,000.
Trevor Scott, Ford's head of marketing, says all of these things are what target markets, young buyers want.
"It defies most of your expectations and that's what a maverick is, that's how our customers live their lives. It's no compromise to suit their lifestyle," said Trevor Scott with Ford Marketing.
In the auto business they call this the white space, an area where customers want something they just can't find.
And looking at domestics went out of the small car business years ago.
Auto-Merchant analyst Michelle Krebs believes Maverick fits perfectly.
"You've got an F-150 that average price tag is $50,000. You have the Ranger that's smaller, but it's closer to $40,000, so there's a lot of space at the bottom, especially for a very small vehicle," Krebs said.
And of course a pickup truck allows for more carrying space and can cost up to $2,000 a pound for a boat or camper.
"You can see these vehicles with young people in a place that also has a lot of outdoor activity," Krebs said.
Ford will build the Maverick in Hermosillo, Mexico. It goes on sale in the fall.
