Canceled ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ Opens as Top Original Series in Nielsen Streaming Charts
The rankings for May 3-9 come a day after Mark Millar, who created the comic on which the series is based, announced the show wouldn't go forward.
According to Nielsen, Legacy of Jupiter was the top original series on Netflix for its premiere week. However, this was not enough to keep the show going.
Mark Miller's adaptation of the superhero comic pulled in 696 million minutes of viewing time in the week of May 3–9 (it premiered May 7), placing Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale (690 million) at No. 1 among original series. Ranked out. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon's Prime Video and Disney+. A day after releasing the rankings, Miller and Netflix announced that Jupiter's Legacy was done on the streamer. Netflix, which acquired Miller's company Millerworld in 2017, also placed a series order for a live-action show based on her and Leinille Francis Yu's supercruxes.
The watch time of 696 million minutes for Jupiter Legacy is slightly less than Netflix's previous big series, Shadow and Bone. That show had 721 million minutes for its first weekend, then increased to 1.19 billion for the full week of April 26–May 2. It slipped to 555 million for May 3-9.
The Handmaid's Tale fell a fair amount as it moved to a single weekly episode on Hulu (there were three installments at the start of season four). The play's 690 million minutes of viewing time were down 34 percent from the previous week's 1.04 billion. (Nielsen uses its ranking to measure all episodes of a series watched.)
Part Two of Selena: The Series (639 million minutes), the Netflix documentary Sons of Sam (461 million) and the animated show Star Wars: The Bad Batch (251 million) also debuted in the Top 10 Originals on Disney+.
The top title overall for the week was the Netflix animated film The Mitchells vs the Machines, which had 853 million minutes of viewing time – the equivalent of about 7.55 million full performances of the 113-minute film. Amazon's Tom Clancy adaptation Without Regrets (568 million minutes) made a solid run in its second week, dropping nearly 25 percent from its opening.
The streaming platform argues that Nielsen's methodology does not capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures US audiences, not other countries, and currently only includes Amazon, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix in its rankings.
