The Czech Republic on Sunday registered an impressive 2-0 win over the Netherlands to make it to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
Tomas Holes and Patrick Schick scored in the second half as they fought for a semi-final spot with Denmark in Baku next Saturday.
The Netherlands faced an uphill battle after being shown a straight red card at the start of the second half for denying Matthijs de Ligt an opportunity to score.
The Czechs have reached the last eight of the competition for the first time since Euro 2012.
"Of course it feels bad," an emotional De Ligt told NOS TV after the game. "We basically lost the match because of what I did.
"After all, I shouldn't have let the ball bounce. Earlier we were in control and I feel responsible."
It was a sad end for the Netherlands who were taking part in their first tournament knockout match since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
It was a slow start to the game in which the Czechs had their first chance after 23 minutes when Tomas Soucek's diving header went past the post.
The Czechs had an even better chance after 34 minutes but de Ligt made a surprise block to deny Lukas Masopust from close range.
The Netherlands took the lead just before the break when Memphis Depay found Patrick van Aanholt inside the field but failed to hit the target.
Donyell Malén had a great chance in the second half to score in seven minutes, but Czech goalkeeper Tomas VaclÃk was unable to score.
The Netherlands found themselves after 10 men's moment when a long VAR check denied de Ligt the opportunity to score Schick with a handball outside the box.
For the first time since John Heitinga against the Czechs in 2004, a Netherlands player was shown a red card at the Euros.
The Czechs took the lead after 68 minutes when Tomas Kallas set up Holes at the back post at the end of the free kick.
With 10 minutes left, Czech launched a counter-attack and Holes set up a skik to convert from inside the box.
"They were the favorites in this game, to beat such a team 2-0 is an unreal feeling," Holes said.
"They were better with the ball, we struggled, but thanks to our team's performance, we didn't give them much space."
