Dasgupta passed away at his residence in Kolkata in the early hours of Thursday due to old age-related ailments, family members said. He was 77 years old.
Family members said the National Award-winning director was suffering from kidney ailment for a long time & was undergoing dialysis twice a week.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled his death.
Banerjee said, "Saddened by the passing away of eminent filmmaker Buddhadev Dasgupta. Through his works, he infused lyricism in the language of cinema. His death is a great loss to the film fraternity. To his family, colleagues and admirers sympathy." Twitter.
Condoling his death, filmmaker Goutam Ghosh said, "Buddha da was making films, writing articles & was active in spite of ill health. He directed Tope and Urojhaj even when he was not well. It is a great loss for all of us."
Some of Dasgupta's major films include Tahdar Katha, Bagh Bahadur, Charchar and Uttara. He received National Film Awards several times and in several categories, including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Feature Film in Bengali.
