PU has been ranked in the 1,001-1,200 category this year while last year too, it fell in the same slot. This comes days after the varsity slid 26 points in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University rankings for 2021.
Panjab University (PU) has once again failed to make it to the list of top 1,000 universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2022. The rankings were released on Wednesday.
PU has been placed in the 1,001-1,200 category this year as against the same slot last year. This comes after a 26-point drop in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings for 2021.
The QS World University Rankings evaluate universities according to six metrics, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio. A total of 35 Indian universities have made it to the final tally.
As per the QS rankings, the university scores 4.6 in the faculty-student ratio while it is 15.1 for citations per faculty. It has a score of 5.2 in academic reputation while it has scored 3.6 in parameters related to employer reputation. PU has a score of 1.1 in the international student ratio.
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Bombay and Delhi, apart from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, are the only universities in India to find a place in the top 200 slot in the QS World University Rankings 2022.
Student-teacher ratio not improving
In recent years, the university has not been able to recruit full-time teachers and nearly 50% of teaching positions are lying vacant. Ashish Jain, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), PU, said, “We have maintained our score on various parameters this year as well, but the university is lagging behind on the student-teacher ratio, which has been lacking in the last few years. Hasn't improved over the years. Recruitment of teachers in the university."
