Australian wheelchair tennis king Dylan Alcott has made the supreme defense of his Wimbledon quad singles crown, moving closer to a potential calendar year "Golden Slam" title.
The Melbourne star on Saturday secured his third Grand Slam win of the year, following his successes at the Australian Open and most recently at the French Open, with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over his biggest current rival, Dutchman Sam Schröder .
The now 30-year-old will head to Tokyo for the Paralympics and then hope to complete a five-title "Golden Slam" at the US Open.
Schröder, 21, is the only man to beat Alcott this season and was confident of repeating his recent win over the Aussies at last month's French Riviera Open.
Yet the Australian was fastest as he won the 14th Grand Slam singles title of his illustrious career, breaking left-handed Schröder three times in the opening set and three times in the second for a comprehensive victory.
Exhibiting more flair and touch than the Dutchman, especially with his drop shots that consistently caused Schröder's problems, Alcott again showed why he was able to communicate with the Wimbledon crowd through his show of emotion and virtuoso shotmaking. With has become a firm favourite.
After wrapping up his win in 67 minutes, Alcott, once a showman, spun in his wheelchair on the No. 3 court to the delight of a crowd that featured a small but noisy Aussie contingent.
