The Orlando Magic have appointed Jamahal Mosley as the team's new head coach.
Sources told ESPN that Dallas Mavericks assistant Mosley has agreed to a four-year deal.
The Magic is replacing Steve Clifford, who reciprocated with the team last month. Orlando reached the playoffs in consecutive years before trade deadline deals including All-Stars Nikola Vucevi (Chicago) and Ivan Fournier (Boston) this season put them into rebuilding mode.
Magic's search process was narrowed down to two candidates, Mosley and Denver assistant Wes Unseld Jr., who have emerged as one of the leading candidates for the Washington Wizards vacancy, sources said earlier this week.
Mosley's role with the Mavericks over the past seven years notably includes his close relationship with All-NBA guard Luka Doncic and influential work. Mosley replaced Rick Carlisle, a quarantined one for the Mavericks' win over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden in April, Doncic told Mosley's reporters, "he has what he needs for a head coach."
Mosley, 42, spent the last seven years with the Mavericks under Carlisle, eventually taking on the role of associate head coaching. Mosley also served on the staff of the Cleveland Cavaliers (2010–2014) and Denver Nuggets (2005–2010). Mosley's aggressive philosophy has been shaped under two Hall of Fame-level coaches: Carlisle and George Karl.
In addition to their two lotteries in the 2021 draft, the Magic have a young core of players that include Cole Anthony, Chuma Okeke, Mo Bamba and Wendell Carter Jr. Magic could potentially have $30 million in salary-cap space to spend in free agency.
The Magic are also expected to make two starts with season-ending injuries: guard Markel Fultz and forward Jonathan Isaacs.
