As always, the rankings are divided into top 10 lists
for positions, as well as a countdown of managers, to provide the most
meaningful look at talent on the pitch and side.
Main takeaways
While last year were dominated by Liverpool and BayernMunich - clubs combined for eight of the 10 No. 1 places - in this year's
edition the leaders are spread across six teams, neither of which has more than
two men at the helm. Category.
However, a common theme was that two out of 10 leaders
won silverware in the past 12 months, be it at the club or international level.
What we wanted voters to think about: Put reputation aside and ask "What
have you done for me lately?" focus on. outlook, with the top performers
of the year getting their due.
Once again, with 41 new entries (compared to 47 in
2020 and 43 in 2019), names have been traded extensively. Meanwhile, there are
28 nationalities, with 26 clubs represented, as well as three international
teams.
For major competitions, the Premier League leads the
way with 41 representatives, followed by LaLiga (21), Serie A (14), Bundesliga(10) and Ligue 1 (10).
How the lists were made
During October's international break, 77 ESPN experts
from around the world - from editors to writers, TV talent and former players -
selected from a list of more than 300 players and managers. In addition, if the
name they wanted was not there, they had the option of adding a write-in
nomination.
It's not just the "best players in the
world" megalist; Its purpose is to isolate specific areas of the pitch so
that comparisons can be made between people with similar roles. Thus, each
voter submitted 10 separate ballots, of which we counted the numbers before
final review by selected authors and editors.
(And yes, we acknowledge that some players may
occasionally play elsewhere on the pitch in certain situations; we made a call
to ensure their votes were not split into two categories!)
Assessing the Top 10s
In addition to spotlighting a high point from the year
that showed each player and manager in their best light, Tor-Christian
Karlsson, who has served as a scout and executive for clubs including Monaco,Zenit St Petersburg and Watford, Evaluates each game's inclusion.
So there we have it: from the goalkeeper to the
striker and everywhere in between - as well as the guys - it's FC 100!
GOALKEEPER
Beyond intercepting shots and acting as a
"sweeper-keeper", the goalie is the first step in building strikes;
Be it with a long, precise throw or a reckoning crossfield pass. Agility and
reflexes are a given, but confidence and vision are more important.
1. Keylor Navas
Club / country: Paris Saint-Germain / Costa Rica
Age: 34
2020 rank: 7
Scouting reports: Navas has built a successful career at some of the
biggest clubs in the world thanks to his incredible reflexes, jumping ability
and agility. Acrobatic and capable of making memorable saves, Navas' most
enduring memories are stretched horizontally, getting his hands to tip the ball
around the post. He is responsive in the sense that he gets better the more he
is tested, though not the sophisticated, well-rounded breed of goalkeeper that
has been favored in recent years.
High Point of 2021: Even after PSG's 4-1 win at the
Camp Nou, there was a moment in the second leg of the Champions League last-16
in Paris when it looked like Barcelona could be back in a tie. However, Navas
saved from Sergio's death drive and Lionel Messi's penalty to ensure that did
not happen.
Club / country: Aston Villa / Argentina
Age: 29
2020 rank: Not ranke
Scouting report: Given that Martinez has only completed one full
season as a first-choice goalkeeper, and looked average until picked up by
Aston Villa, the Argentina No. 1 is making a mark as a late bloomer. Low on
confidence after failing to get a chance during an eight year career at
Arsenal, he made the move to Villa and hasn't looked back. His well-publicised
antics in resorting to any method possible to put off an attacker when faced
with penalties (he's saved four this season) grab the headlines, but Martinez
is a solid and reliable shot stopper.
High point of 2021: Martinez only earned his first
Argentina cap in June but quickly became a hero in his homeland with Golden
Glove-winning Copa America form. He produced a hat trick of saves in the
semifinal penalty shootout win over Colombia, then kept a clean sheet in a 1-0
final win against Brazil.
Club / country: Barcelona / Germany
Age: 29
2020 rank: 4
Scouting report: Though not quite as impressive as previous seasons,
the Germany international is still among the top goalkeepers in the game. As is
compulsory for any Barcelona goalkeeper, Ter Stegen is always available for his
defenders and contributes in moving the ball around at the back well. Blessed
with rapid reflexes, he has generally proved to have good timing when rushing
off his line to stop an attacker. He's also good at restarting play through
long, precise throws.
High point of 2021: Ter Stegen came up with a huge
performance against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey semifinal, saving a penalty
from Lucas Ocampos as Barca overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to reach the
final. It laid the foundations for the only trophy won by the Blaugrana in the
last two years.
Club / country: Chelsea / Senegal
Age: 29
2020 rank: Not ranked
Scouting Report: Despite being a respected goalkeeper in Ligue 1,
alongside Reims and Rennes, Mendy has taken his game even further after
switching to the Premier League. At 6-foot-4, the Senegal international's reach
not only gives him the edge in catching the cross, but he's also deceptively
quick to descend to make low saves on both sides. Quickly composed and measured
in his delivery, making him frequently launching attacks, he has become a key
component of Chelsea's defence.
High point of 2021: Mendy almost single-handedly
earned Chelsea three points at Brentford in October. He made seven astonishing
saves in the 1–0 win, prompting manager Thomas Tuchel to call him
"absolutely decisive" and left-back Ben Chilwell to say: "We
have [Mendy] to thank, he is amazing. Were."
5.
Ederson
Club
/ country: Manchester City / Brazil
Age: 28
2020
rank: 6
Scouting
report: One of the closest rivals to Manuel Neuer when it
comes to the quality of his first touch and distribution, Ederson is fundamental
to Pep Guardiola's brand of football at Manchester City. The Brazilian's
left-footed strike is arguably the cleanest and most powerful among goalkeepers
at the highest level (he'd probably have a go at taking direct free-kicks, if
he was allowed to). The occasions he gets caught out due to concentration
lapses are getting fewer and is now a complete player with a knack for saving
penalties.
High
point of 2021: There are few goalkeepers with
Ederson's vision and distribution, which is so important to a Guardiola side.
An example of his brilliance was seen in May when he played a 60-yard pass in
the build-up to City's opening goal in the Champions League semifinal second
leg against PSG.
6.
Alisson
Club
/ country: Liverpool / Brazil
Age: 29
2020
rank: 2
Scouting Report: An aggressive, brave goalkeeper whose excellent
game-reading skills and general alertness enable him to make a great number of
interceptions. Very aggressive in the way of defending its target; Always on
the front foot and early from your line. The Brazilian is very capable, nimble
with his feet and delivers confidence to his defenders with his assertive,
active style.
High point of 2021: In May, Liverpool's Premier League top-four hopes
were in jeopardy when Alisson West Bromwich joined his teammates in the Albion
penalty area. A header flick later, the goalkeeper scored an unlikely winner
that helped seal a Champions League spot.
Club / country: Real Madrid / Belgium
Age: 29
2020 rank: 5
Scouting Report: At 6-foot-7, Courtois is one of the tallest
goalkeepers at the elite level and his presence in the goal makes him hard to
beat. The Belgium international, who is closing in on his 100th cap, is
incredibly consistent and rarely misses a game or makes obvious errors.
Excellent at catching crosses, he acrobatics impressively for his size and has
an easy-going reflex. His footwork may not be the highest, but it is improving.
High Point of 2021: Perhaps Courtois's best performance of the year came
in a 1-0 Champions League win for Madrid at Inter earlier this season. His fine
save denied goalscorer Lautaro Martinez's header as well as two attempts from
Edin Dzeko, as Los Blancos snatched three points.
8. Manuel Neuer
Club / country: Bayern Munich / Germany
Age: 35
2020 rank: 1
Scouting Report: The original "sweeper keeper" is still one
of the best in the sport when it comes to footwork. Few other goalkeepers are
just as comfortable with handling the ball on their feet. Whether it's short or
medium passes with the right pace and angles, pinpointing a long diagonal or
even finding a run behind, Neuer can do it all. He advances when his team is in
possession like no other goalkeeper, while his reflexes and game-reading skills
are still of the highest order.
High Point of 2021: Neuer is a modern goalkeeper, in that his ability on
the ball is as important as his stopping the shot. As such, it was no big deal
to see him shoot a 60-yard pass to set up a Champions League goal for Robert
Lewandowski against Benfica in November.
Club / country: Paris Saint-Germain (moved from AC Milan in July) / Italy
Age: 22
2020 rank: 8
Scouting Report: In addition to the size and appearance it takes to
control its territory, the Italy International is technically prolific.
Although initially recognized for his quick reflexes on the line, his ability
to timing and eliminate a flamboyant opponent is now his trademark.
Donnarumma's delivery has also steadily improved over the past few seasons, to
the extent that he is confident enough to be used by his defenders to play away
from pressure, as well as the ability to get his hands on the cross safely.
They have capability.
High Point of 2021: The 6-ft-5 stopper used every inch of his frame to
become Italy's Euro 2020 penalty king. He saved from lvaro Morata to help
secure a place in the final, then put out further penalties from Jadon Sancho
and Bukayo Saka in a shootout win over England.
10. Jan Oblak
Club / country: Atletico Madrid / Slovenia
Age: 28
2020 rank: 3
Scouting Report: Contrary to the "sweeper keeper" trend,
Slovenia International is all about the bread and butter of goalkeeping:
stopping goals. In addition to his delivery under pressure, Oblak is equipped
with absolute No. 1: strong hands and exceptional agility. He holds himself
very well (even when out) and his concentration and reflexes are fast enough
that he can reshape his body to prevent late deflections. A world class
goalkeeper and deserving of the No. 1 spot here.
High point of 2021: A fingerprint left from Lionel Messi at Camp Nou in
May was perhaps Oblak's most important stop this year. This ensured that the
game ended without a goal, earning Atlético a point at the business end of the
season and dealing a major blow to Barcelona's hopes of winning LaLiga.
RIGHT-BACK
Perhaps once the least skilled outfield player, now
right-backs are often converted wingers, bringing courage and unpredictability.
Positional awareness, pinpoint crossings and high speed differentiate the best
from the rest.
Club / country: Bayern Munich / France
Age: 25
2020 rank: 3
Scouting reports: Unlike the modern full-back, the Powered (as a
re-schooled centre-back) doesn't have lightning speed or a natural desire to
outdo many of his top-class contemporaries. The France international, on the
other hand, is a highly intelligent footballer who keeps up with the times and
reads danger quickly. He is good in the air for a wide defender, tackles well
and is built on the ball. A very useful team player who keeps on improving.
High point of 2021: Pavard won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and was
part of the UEFA Nations League-winning side of France. Injury and suspension
have hit him lately, but his faith remains; As he himself said: "Great
coaches put me on the right-back because they have confidence in my
abilities."
Club / country: Chelsea / Spain
Age: 32
2020 rank: Not ranked
Scouting Report: With over 300 Premier League appearances to his name,
Azpilicueta has been an incredible servant to Chelsea with his versatility,
diligence and consistency. No matter the formation or position, the Spain
international defender put in a good innings, arriving mainly as a full-back
but also using himself in the centre. His ability to read and guess the game
enables him to win most of his duets, he rarely looks into trouble and takes
care of his tasks in an expert manner. A respected leader too.
High point of 2021: Lifting the Champions League trophy as captain of
Chelsea was the pinnacle of a career for a persistent competitor and his club
form also saw Azpilicueta qualify for a return to Spain's squad after a
three-year absence; He played a key role in helping La Rosa reach the
semi-finals of Euro 2020.
Club / country: Inter Milan (moved from PSV Eindhoven in August) / Netherlands
Age: 25
2020 rank: Not ranked
Scouting Report: The Netherlands wing-back garnered praise with some
impressive performances during Euro 2020 this summer, scoring two goals in the
process. Still yet to claim regular status after his €12.5m move from PSV to
Inter in the summer, he is an eager, enthusiastic broad man who backs up the
attack as he continues to advance. Dumfries offers a large number of crosses,
but may struggle with accuracy.
High point of 2021: Dumfries scored in consecutive matches at Euro 2020
against Ukraine and Austria - their late, dominant winner in the former game
provided the final, turning point in a five-goal thriller - and those
performances skyrocketed his profile. Help Touch up and earn him a trick for
Inter.
Club / country: Atletico Madrid / England
Age: 31
2020 rank: 9
Scouting Report: A reliable right-back with a balanced attacking
versus defensive play. Apart from being a good crosser of the ball and a
regular set-piece taker, Trippier is positive in his passing and always wants
to progress with the ball after the opening touch. He has done well in one of
the best defensive units in European football at Atlético Madrid.
High point of 2021: The first trophy of his career, when Atletico won
LaLiga, justified England's 2019 decision to leave their comfort zone and test
themselves with a move to Spain. Trippier made 28 league starts in 2020-21 and
his consistency was a key factor in the success of Diego Simeone's side.
5. Jesus Navas
Club / country: Sevilla / Spain
Age: 36
2020 rank: 6
Scouting Report: With over 400 league appearances for Sevilla and Manchester
City, Navas - who permanently switched from a winger to a right-back two years
ago - covers the right flank with expertise. He takes advantageous positions to
engage himself to advance and is a non-stop provider of quality crosses in the
box (about five per game). Although fast approaching his 36th birthday, he has
remained consistent in his performance.
High Point of 2021: Navas has already found a place in Sevilla history:
no player has lifted more trophies, the club's attendance record holder. He
captained them to fourth place in LaLiga with 77 points - another all-time high
- and is part of a title push in the ongoing campaign.
6. Kyle Walker
Club / country: Manchester City / England
Age: 31
2020 rank: 5
Scouting Report: From trading mostly on his sprinter-like pace as a
conservative right-back, the England defender has evolved under Guardiola into
a flexible, deftly smart, all-around defender. While not being particularly
productive in the creative side of the game when crossing the halfway point
(his crossing rarely leads to goals or opportunities in the field), he is
undoubtedly one of the best one-versus-one defenders out there.
High point of 2021: After winning his place back, Walker was instrumental
in Man City's Premier League title success and started every knockout-stage
game in the Champions League final. His best performance came in the semi-final
against Paris Saint-Germain, helping to keep Kylian Mbappe and Neymar calm.
7. Reece James
Club / country: Chelsea / England
Age: 21
2020 rank: Not ranked
Scouting Report: Already a solid, strong and athletic defender, James
has improved since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea manager. The England
international loves to score attacking runs well behind the opposing full-back
or over the shoulder and has recently shown an impressive ability to score with
a powerful shot from either leg. Plays with an infectious enthusiasm for the
game.
High point of 2021: A sign of James' all-rounder qualities, which have
made him important to club and country, came during Chelsea's 2-0 win at
Arsenal in August: he kept the opener for Romelu Lukaku, Then scored himself,
playing his part in another stellar defensive performance from the all-European
champions.
8. Joao Cancelo
Club / country: Manchester City / Portugal
Age: 27
2020 rank: Not ranked
Scouting Report: The Portugal international plays with great energy,
determination and confidence. Always eager to receive the ball and involve
himself in the build-up phase, he passes with both feet well, often looking for
alternatives rather than taking the ball across wide areas. He has a powerful
shot in both feet and is happy to try his luck from the most impossible
distances. A constant, constant threat, although his enthusiasm may lead him to
run in the dark alleys. Cancillo wins an impressive percentage of defensive
picks (60%) and is strong in the air for a full-back.
High point of 2021: In the opening 20 minutes at West Brom in January,
Cancillo almost single-handedly won three points for title-chasing City. He
founded Ilkay Gundogan, then created another himself. And he can play on any
flank; No wonder teammate Phil Foden called him the best attacking full-back in
the world.
Club / country: Liverpool / England
Age: 23
2020 rank: 1
Scouting Report: An unusual full-back whose main strength is found in
the technical side of his game. While he is often involved in attack through
overlaps or by bursting wide areas, he is equally adept at controlling the ball
from a deep position and indicating forward passes (2.7 key passes per game
this year right- Quite surprising for the back) or the diagonal hitting
quickly. Alexander-Arnold is also one of the best crossers of the ball in the
Premier League. Not yet regarded as a specialist defender, but recovers a
respectable amount of balls in the opponent's half.
High Point of 2021: His man of the match performance in November against
Atletico Madrid was a masterclass. Both Liverpool's goals came from right
footed deliveries in the penalty area from Alexander-Arnold, who could have had
some full-backs in the match.
10. Achraf Hakimi
Club / country: Paris Saint-Germain (moved from Inter Milan in July) / Morocco
Age: 23
2020 rank: 2
Scouting Report: Hakimi proved to be the perfect wing-back on the
right side of Antonio Conte's Scudetto-winning Inter Milan team. Like Borussia
Dortmund before, the Morocco international - who can also play on the left -
was an irrepressible presence, threatening to attack relentlessly with his
strong running and winger-esque dribbling skills. He scored a remarkable seven
league goals for Inter and started his Ligue 1 career in impressive fashion
this summer after a €60m move.
High point of 2021: Having started the year as a key member of Inter team
that won the club's first Serie A title in 11 years, Hakimi has made the
biggest impact of PSG's high-profile summer arrival, notably Since he scored
twice - including a 95th-minute winner - in a 2-1 win at Metz in September.
CENTRE-BACK
Being a top defender requires more than just size,
assertiveness and strength. Many are cultured in the possession of superior
people; Others are the epitome of nonsense force. Great people combine time and
power under pressure with elegance and poise.
Club / country: Liverpool / Netherlands
Age: 30
2020 rank: 1
Scouting Report: A centre-back who leads verbally, by appearance, and
by example. Almost unbeatable in doubles - in the air or on the ground - the
Liverpool defender is also extremely intelligent in his position and is usually
one step ahead of his opponent. His ability to hit a long diagonal pass is
about as good as you'll find. And, with his excellent heading technique, he is
also a natural target for the set piece.
High Point of 2021: The biggest sign of Van Dijk's importance was seen in
Liverpool's struggle to qualify for the Champions League while he was out with
an injury. Since the return of their defensive leader, Jurgen Klopp's side has
improved to challenge for the Premier League title and cruise in Europe.
Club / country: Juventus / Italy
Age: 34
2020 rank: 4
Scouting Report: He didn't dominate as much as a few years ago, but
Bonucci is still one of the most complete defenders of his generation. The
Juventus man brings massive amounts of experience and leadership qualities,
while he adapts his game to his defensive partners, be it Chiellini or Matthijs
de Ligt. Despite losing some of his mobility and sprinting speed as he ages,
Bonucci is still able to use his tactical awareness and sheer power to get the
ball first. Their long passes are also usually of a higher standard.
High point of 2021: A colossus at the back during Italy's memorable run
to Euro 2020 victory, Bonucci was also a frequent starter of forward moves and
scored Italy's equalizer against England in the final, as he scored the fastest
After reacting tapped from close range. chance.
3. Thiago Silva
Club / country: Chelsea / Brazil
Age: 37
2020 rank: 3
Scouting Report: The former AC Milan and PSG defender is still one of
the most aggressive defenders in world football, providing a focal point in the
middle of Chelsea's last three. His success ratio from challenges in the air
and on the ground remains above 70%, and he is still an expert organizer of a
defensive line and sets the pieces evenly. The Brazilian legend always plays
with 100% focus, while he runs, acts and defends with world-class expertise.
High point of 2021: Silva produced a defensive masterclass to keep Real
Madrid's Karim Benzema at bay in the second leg of the Champions League
semi-finals. The France international - one of the frontrunners for this year's
Ballon d'Or - barely made a kick, with a Silva overhead-kick clearance
particularly impressive.
Club / country: Napoli / Senegal
Age: 30
2020 rank: 4
Scouting Report: Despite taking over the Napoli defence for years, the
Senegalese International has not yet received due recognition outside Italy.
From a visual standpoint, Koulibaly can seem so casual and impressive that he
makes it easy to defend. When he sets his mind to refill the ball, he
practically goes to get it. The tall, elegant center-back plays with such
authority that it's charming enough to look at (though he can be too
ostentatious at times.)
High point of 2021: He loves a late winner against Juventus, and his
tap-in sealed Napoli's victory in September. The 2020-21 campaign was not an
old season, but Koulibaly has been crucial to Napoli's incredible start to the
current season, which sees them riding high in Serie A.
5. David Alaba
Club / country: Real Madrid (moved from Bayern Munich in July) / Austria
Age: 29
2020 rank: 3
Scouting report: Alaba's goal for his new club Real Madrid in El
Clasico against Barcelona in October sums him up as a player: after making an
early interception in the defence, he made the move with a clean left foot
strike Raised the pitch to end. In other words, the Austria International has
the intuition of a defender, the vertical running power of a midfielder and the
finish of a striker (let alone leadership and determination which any player
would want.) It is difficult to choose a player equally tactically adaptable.
Is. Highest level in the last 30 years. No matter whether he starts the game in
the heart of the defence, on the left wing or as a playwright in the midfield,
Alaba performs his duties with great quality and intelligence.
High Point of 2021: What better way for Real Madrid fans to make
themselves heroes than by scoring against Barcelona on their Clasico debut?
Alba turned in a stellar performance in another sign that he has settled into
life in Spain after signing as a free agent, leaving Bayern Munich.
Club / country: Chelsea / Germany
Age: 28
2020 rank: Not ranked
Scouting Report: From the talented but occasional stint we saw in his
youthful days with Stuttgart and Roma, the Germany international has
established himself as a reliable, active centre-back - whether playing to the
left of Chelsea's back three Be it or four behind in the center of Germany. A
reliable passer of the ball, Rudiger is still a defender who thrives on the
physical side of the game: He is extremely powerful and comes out on top of an
impressive 75% of his defensive doubles.
High point of 2021: Rudiger's transformation under Thomas Tuchel has been
exceptional, after at least appearing under Frank Lampard. An impressive
performance showed his improvement in a 3–0 win at Tottenham in September, where he scored
Chelsea's third goal with a fine finish.
Club
/ country: Manchester United (moved from Real Madrid in August)
/ France
Age: 28
2020
rank: 6
Scouting
Report: Although the France international hasn't had the best
of years for Real Madrid or Man United, it is difficult to trace the apparent
decline in his game. He is arguably one of the fastest centre-backs in the
game, excellent in the air and good enough on the ball to play efficiently from
behind. Verne has the ideal physique for his mid-back - tall and athletic, yet
mobile in short spots - and has developed the snout to make decisive
interceptions in the box.
High
point of 2021: He left a comfortable Madrid life
to challenge himself in England and started with a game-winning assist on
debut, but arguably Varane's most memorable moment from United's first match of
the season against Leeds was earlier; His on-pitch presentation turned Old
Trafford into a frenzy and helped them secure a 5-1 win.
Club / country: Juventus / Italy
Age: 37
2020
rank: Not ranked
Scouting
reports: While he regularly played left-back or wing-back in
his early days, in his later years the Italian legend has become best known for
his hardworking and tenacious defense. Chiellini has never lost a challenge in
mind (he wins about three-quarters of his defensive challenges), and his
willingness to defend at any cost by blocking, tackling or throwing himself in
front of the ball is a dying art. One of the toughest opponents to face can be
either physically or verbally; Chiellini will be with you all night.
High
point of 2021: The Italy captain and leader
produced one of the iconic images of Euro 2020 when he pulled Bukayo Saka back
from his shirt as the England substitute threatened to break through late in
the final. The move showed Chiellini's ruthlessness and intelligence and why he
is still a nightmare for the Raiders.
9.
Marquinhos
Club
/ country: Paris Saint-Germain / Brazil
Age: 27
2020
rank: 10
Scouting
Report: Equally proficient at playing in the defensive
midfield, Marquinhos's main characteristic is his control of the ball and
understanding of the game. He falls deep to direct the game from behind and
starts the attack with a pass in midfield. While the Brazilian usually prefers
to tackle the threat by making early interceptions, he is also capable of
outwitting his opponent in a competitive duel. He brings structure and
leadership to the defense.
High
point of 2021: The defender scores a goal in
Brazil's Copa America opener against Venezuela as part of an emphatic
performance in a 3-0 win. Selecao's coach Tite wants the attack to start from
behind, and Marquinhos is at the center of this, who has also developed into
one of the team's leaders.
10.
Ruben Dias
Club
/ country: Manchester City / Portugal
Age: 24
2020
rank: Not ranked
Scouting
Report: The way Dias went from a promising centre-back to the
backbone of a team that won the Premier League title in the Portuguese league
is almost unprecedented. His measured, calm style resembles that of a seasoned
defender in his peak years (usually between 28-32). He reads the game so well
as to make interceptions, and is an outspoken commander of his teammates. He is
also quick over long distances, good on the ball – his medium and long passes
are of particularly high quality – and dominates in the air.
High
point of 2021: Dias proved to be a worthy
replacement for Vincent Kompany, the first defender to win England's Football
Writers' Player of the Year award since Steve Nicholl in 1989. A memorable
moment came in the win over Man United, when he launched a slide tackle before
Scott McTominay got the ball, yet won it cleanly.
LEFT-BACK
Leading
left-back is as comfortable locking a winger as they turn into one in
possession. Some are not even left-footed, but positional awareness and
information sees them drift to central defense or midfield.
1.
Luke Shaw
Club
/ country: Manchester United / England
Age: 26
2020
rank: Not ranked
Scouting
Report: After a few seasons in the woods, Shaw has worked to
become a key player for England and Manchester United. A physically strong and
determined defender who often tries to lock down his opponents and win the ball
early. Tall, compact and good in the air, Shaw is eager to join the attack
through offensive runs, making himself available through overlaps or finding
space inside the box. His recent performance has dropped with the rest of the
United team, but he was a star at Euro 2020.
High
point of 2021: For 65 minutes, Shaw was the hero
of the Euro 2020 final, scoring Italy a stunned second-minute goal to drive
home. It wasn't for England, who eventually lost on penalties, but their left
back had some consolation in the form of a performance that capped a brilliant
individual tournament.
Club
/ country: Real Madrid / France
Age: 26
2020
rank: 10
Scouting
reports: If it weren't for injuries the France international
would already have settled in as Marcelo's long-term successor, but is instead
struggling to advance his Bernabeu career. When fit, Mendy has all the
qualities to be considered a perfect full-back. His passing game is safe and
measured, while he supports his attacking teammates well, with consistent
overlap.
High
point of 2021: Mendy was in exciting form during
his club's run to the Champions League semi-finals at the start of the year,
his best moment with a crucial winner at Atalanta, and the Blancos suffered a
major loss when he suffered an injury April which caused them to miss Euro
2020.
3.
Robin Gosens
Club
/ country: Atalanta / Germany
Age: 27
2020
rank: Not ranked
Scouting
Report: Another high-scoring wing-back, Gossens is certainly
more than a classic wide player. When the attack is on the opposite side, he is
alert enough to position himself well for a rebound or cross, while his
opportunism sees him making productive runs from his marker to watch the finish
at the back post Is. For all his impressive off-the-ball movements, Gossens is
also an exceptionally determined footballer and many of his goals are scored
out of sheer willpower to get to the ball first.
High
point of 2021: Gossens was a bright spot in a
disappointing Euro 2020 for Germany. Playing as a wing-back in a 4–2 win over
Portugal, which was one of the best games of the tournament, he scored one,
made another and generally delighted against opponents as well as his splendid.

Scouting
Report: An intelligent full-back whose sharp forward run
often opens up many attacking options. Thanks to good game-reading skills,
Alonso is good at interception and more than useful in aerial challenges. Used
either as a classic left-back or wing-back, the Spain international usually
deals with defensive positions calmly, even when under pressure. He can also
hit a great free kick.
High
point of 2021: Alonso is out with Frank Lampard
and looks on his way out of Chelsea, but Thomas Tuchel's fine-grained machine
has been a key cog. Known for his attacking skills, Alonso showed he could
defend in an August draw at Liverpool in which Chelsea played the second half
with 10 men.

football, Guerreiro has recorded an impressive 32 goals and numerous assists
during his time at Dortmund (168 games). Almost always available on the left
side during the build-up phase, he has enough legs to contain himself even in
tight central areas. With his relentless attacking style and stamina that rarely
sees him tired, Guerrero is perfectly suited for Dortmund's high-energy
football.
High
point of 2021: Scoring what he called "the
most beautiful goal of my life" in Dortmund's win at Union Berlin in
September, Guerreiro fired a shot into the far corner from an angle that seemed
impossible. Injuries have sabotaged his year overall, but it's a reminder of
what he can do.

Age: 32

Scouting
Report: One of the most reliable players in Barcelona's youth
team who oscillates between brilliant, average and downright poor. With all his
experience, Alba is still a useful combination player on the left and can be
relied upon to deliver quality balls into the box (he averages 4.3 passes per
game in 2021) or key passes in the last third. executes. His influence,
however, has not been the same without the aid of Lionel Messi on the left.
High
Point of 2021: Jordi Alba has been a Barcelona
legend for a long time, but his steady form has been crucial in difficult times
for the club. He had 15 assists last season, two of which were in the Copa del
Rey final. The second, who saw him blazing to the left before cutting the ball

Belgium. By that time Spinazola had impressed with his wonderful attacking
contributions, as well as expertly defending tucking in as the third
center-back to counter the forward moves of the opposing full-back. Tactically
smart, quick and a good combination player, the 28-year-old late bloomer is a
skilled, well-rounded footballer capable of playing multiple positions.
High
Point of 2021: Spinazola was voted man of the

Physically strong and dominant, Hernandez's influence on the game grows as it
opens up for transitions and doubles at either end of the pitch (where he is
mostly victorious). Aggressive and fearless, perhaps too much at times because
he often ends up in the referee's book.
High
point of 2021: After recovering from a two-goal
fall to France in the Nations League semi-final against Belgium, Hernandez
found himself on the edge of the box with time and space as a resounding late

Scouting
Report: Not only does Scotland score high internationally in
terms of quality, but it is also one of the best in terms of quantity. Few
left-backs can match Robertson's consistency; He is almost always available for
selection and is extremely active when he does play, always involved by
providing a constant outlet on the left flank (he averages 70 touches on the
ball per game). An excellent crosser of the ball and also strikes a well
executed outswinger of the set-piece.
High
Point of 2021: Robertson's emotional high point
will be captaining Scotland in the first international tournament in 23 years.
They did not drop out of the group at Euro 2020, but did draw with England in
the final at Wembley. For many Scots, this felt like a famous victory.
CENTRAL
MIDFIELD
The
key to this position is a sense of rhythm; Knowing when to speed up the
transition and when to slow it down. There are different types – tough tackler,
box-to-box machine, nimble playmaker to name three – but the best look at the
entire field.
Club

Age: 24

Scouting
Report: Although this clean, well-educated midfielder has
done well in sub-optimal conditions at Barcelona this year, one has a feeling
that much more is to come from him. Blessed with excellent technical abilities,
varied passing (93% in 2021) as well as excellent vision and game sense, de
Jong still has room to exercise even more authority and decisiveness on his
game. He moves well with the ball and is a sharp thinker who suits Barcelona's
style of play.
High
point of 2021: De Jong was everywhere in April's
Copa del Rey final as Barcelona crushed Athletic Bilbao. Hitting the post in
the first half, he scored the opening goal for Antoine Griezmann, found himself
on the scoresheet and assisted Lionel Messi, in the eight-minute period after
the interval.
Club

Scouting
Report: Even from a role deep in midfield, the Germany
international has a habit of reaching the scoresheet - either courtesy of his
excellent shot from afar, his uncanny ability to sniff out the right spots for
late runs in the box, or A sure punishment. Gundogan is a highly intelligent
footballer with an exceptional timing for his actions, be it in his movement or
that of teammates.
High
Point of 2021: Gundogan unexpectedly becomes
City's main goal source from midfield in the club's title push. He scored two
runs and won a penalty in a 3-0 win over Tottenham in February, a week after he
braced against Liverpool. Those four goals brought his number to an incredible

role model for many up-and-coming central midfielders and has been what makes
the Real Madrid midfield tick over the years. It may appear that the ball is
pulled towards him after receiving it, then feeding a fully weighted pass to
his teammates. Modric has a sharp vision and always plays with his head held
high, while his dribbling skills and ball control are also world-class.
High
Point of 2021: Modric is one of LaLiga's best
midfielders, but his Euro 2020 performance against Scotland stood out. In
addition to a passing and movement clinic at Hampden Park, he scored one of the
best goals of the tournament from 20 yards, finding the outside top corner of
his right boot.

Age: 19

rank: Not ranked
Scouting
Report: Although only 19, Pedri plays to the intelligence and
maturity of his 10 years his senior. Since coming from Las Palmas, he has
played in practically all midfield positions for Barcelona (central and wide),
but he will probably end up as a permanent "number 8". Pedri is so
well developed and naturally talented that it's hard to spot any weaknesses in
his game; His delivery is quick, crisp and positive (1.25 key passes per game
in 2011), he is deftly smart and he has the discipline to win defensive
challenges and track to cover for the advancing full-back.
High
Point of 2021: A key figure in Spain's race for
the semi-finals at Euro 2020, Pedri was named the youth player of the tournament.
The teenager excelled throughout the final, but was particularly outstanding in
a 5–3 win over Croatia in the last-16, helping set up La Rosa's three goals.

Casemiro
Club
/ country: Real Madrid / Brazil
Age: 29
2020
rank: 4
Scouting
Report: Brazil is possibly the most effective
"promoter" in world football. Not only does he cover large areas of
the pitch, which is invaluable for pressure purposes, he also puts up an
impressive average of 16 picks per game – of which he wins on 60% of the occasions
(2021). He also wins a good portion of his air battles, intercepts well and
generally takes no prisoners in 50-50 situations. Away from his destructive
side, Casemiro is a safe passer of the ball and has evolved in recent years in
his role as Brazil's captain.
High
point of 2021: There have been some important
goals for club and country, but the defensive side of Casemiro's
man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool showed their best qualities as
Madrid rallied to reach Champions Jurgen Klopp side in a goalless draw. League

Scouting
report: Verratti prefers the role of the deep-lying

has played behind the striker as "Number 10" in senior football). I
entered). The Italy international is excellent at controlling the pace of the
game, often swinging the ball across the defense while waiting to find the
right substitute in midfield. His excellent touch and ability to
control/progress with the ball makes him difficult to get out, while he is
often the target of pressure and fouls. Verratti has an excellent range of
passing and although he doesn't score very high, he is an expert free-kick
taker.
High
point of 2021: Verratti returned from injury at
Euro 2020 against Wales and was arguably the best player on the pitch, with
more touches (136), more passes (103) to complete and more chances than anyone
else (5) Had to make Since then, he was irreplaceable for coach Roberto

Club

Scouting
Report: A multifunctional central midfielder who guarantees
maximum levels of commitment and tenacity regardless of his duties or position.
With his relentless running and ability to set off on a sprint with the ball,
Barela's most fitting position is probably as "Number 8". Apart from
his impressive physical and mental qualities (he always plays with great
focus), the Inter Milan midfielder also delivers a strong shot from afar and is
good on the set-piece as well.
High
point of 2021: Despite winning Serie A with
Inter, it was Barella's quarterfinal performance at Euro 2020 that lives on in
memory. He put on a match-winning performance - scoring the opener and making
it second to Lorenzo Insigne - as Italy beat Belgium 2–1 in Munich.

Jorginho
Club
/ country: Chelsea / Italy
Age: 29
2020

Scouting
Report: The deep-lying playwright played a key role in the
successes of both club and country this year. Jorginho plays with such rhythm
and confidence that he takes top-class football easy and always has a clear
idea of what he wants to do before receiving the ball. He picks the right
spots and makes sure his team's right flows while keeping the ball clear of
congested areas on the pitch. His delivery is excellent and he makes sure to
pick the best option even under pressure.
High
point of 2021: Jorginho enjoys a winning penalty
against Spain to book Italy's place in the Euro 2020 final, but it was his
consistency for Champions League winners Chelsea and European champions Italy
that made him a Ballon d'Or candidate inspired in the conversation.
Club

Scouting
Report: A classy and composed player who pulls strings
centrally for Bayern. Kimmich started off as a full-back but moved into
midfield and his strategic mind set him out in both phases of the game. He
reads things so well that he can position himself to sabotage an opponent's
attacks, while he watches his own teammates' movements centrally enough to make
passing choices. , often finds his forward with a line-breaking pass (he has
2.2 key passes per game in 2021.)
High
Point of 2021: Having been used at a right-back
earlier in his career, Kimmich is firmly settled in the center of Bayern's
midfield and serves as one of the team's creative hubs. He scored 10 league
goals last season, including an assist hat-trick at Schalke 04 in January.
10.
N'Golo Kante
Club
/ country: Chelsea / France
Age: 30
2020
rank: 5
Scouting
Report: A rare type of defensive midfielder who combines
maneuverability and high work rate with simple, efficient passing and
first-class ball-carrying abilities (especially in transitional plays). Thorn
appears to be working two players in midfield as he circles around the pitch,
locking opponents in, winning the ball and passing the ball quickly. He is the
perfect team player, an all-round good guy and the ideal foil for a more
attacking teammate to flourish.
High
Point of 2021: Kante was man of the match in
four of Chelsea's seven Champions League knockout games, including both the
semi-final against Real Madrid and the final against Man City. In a game with
Madrid, he seemed to cover every blade of the grass as well as playing a key
role in both Chelsea goals.

Scouting
Report: A slightly unconventional central midfielder who has
the build and skill set of an out-and-out defensive midfielder, but his urge to
move on and get used to getting into goal-scoring positions matches better with
"No.8" Is. Either way, the Czech Republic international is
exceptionally good in the air and his superior game-reading ability is of great
importance to West Ham. His stamina is truly remarkable and he covered the most
ground in the Premier League last season, covering a distance of 437km,
including 17km in 120 minutes in the FA Cup loss against Manchester United in
February Was.
High
Point of 2021: In the 2020-21 season, in which
Sousek scored 10 Premier League goals, a memorable performance saw him win a
record-breaking 17 Hawaii doubles against Burnley in May. The €21 million fee
paid to sign him from Slavia Prague in July 2020 is proving to be a bargain.

Scouting
Report: The Denmark international matched a fine Serie A
season with some inspiring performances at Euro 2020. His penchant for scoring
brilliant goals from afar became evident this summer, while his strong
ball-carrying skills - especially when the pitch opens up. His counter-attacks
- and technical ability - are also of a high standard. Damsgaard is efficient,
good one versus one and works hard for the team too; No wonder they are being
monitored by a group of elite European clubs.
High
point of 2021: Playing a full role in his
country's memorable Euro 2020 semi-final run, Damsgaard scored a remarkable
free kick against England from nearly 30 yards, contributing to a beautifully weighted
effort against Russia earlier that saw the Dane Gave a platform to reach the
knockouts. Round.

Scouting
Report: From a slightly darker role than before with AC
Milan, Brazil looks to be a brand new player in Lyon. While still able to
participate with accurate passes in the final third, he is also allowed to pick
up the ball from the centre-back, often initiating attacking moves. In addition
to his flair and creativity, Paqueta makes a change for his team and regularly
wins the ball in midfield.
High
Point of 2021: He has impressed for Lyon, but
his best moment came in the Copa America semi-finals when he guided Brazil
behind Peru. After a series of remarkable saves from Peru's Pedro Galiz,
Paqueta eventually found a way out as he stroked Neymar's cross.
Club
/ country: Manchester City / Portugal
Age: 27

Scouting
Report: Although already highly regarded, the Portugal
international has kicked this season to another level. He constantly presses on
and off when not in possession, sniffs in front of an opponent to pick up loose
balls, and his tireless effort can be documented in the great number of short
sprints in every game. Silva seems to have improved his passing game
technically and tactically with an added variety and creativity. Fast becoming
a big-player for Manchester City, he has been used in various positions this
season.
High
point of 2021: It may only be against Burnley,
but Silva was so good in the October win that Pep Guardiola was forced to say
he was "out of this world" level of his first 2018-19 campaign had
reached. The City manager added: "[Silva] is very comfortable; he always

Scouting
Report: Over the past year Mount has become an almost
indispensable player for the club and the country. With his ability to
establish effective interchanges and combinations, as well as to take on
opponents (or even eliminate from distance), the midfielder is most dangerous
when progressing with the ball in the last third. Without the ball he is
diligent in his pressure game and always wants to get possession quickly.
2021
High Point: Before Norwich's trip to Chelsea
in October, Mount had not recorded any goals or assists in the 2021-22 season.
Ninety minutes later, he scored the first hat-trick of his career on the ball
of the match, which included a brilliant drive from the edge of the box. He
even recorded an assist for good measure.

Paul Pogba
Club
/ country: Manchester United / France
Age: 28
2020
rank: 8
Scouting
Report: Over the years the France international has shown in
a flash that he has all the physical, technical and tactical credentials to be
the best central midfielder in the world. Whether as "number 8", an
assistant forward or even a midfielder, Pogba has the ability to carry the
ball, the variation of passing, the athleticism and the power to make a
devastating impact. Perhaps moving to another club would help define a clearer
role for him than in the case at Old Trafford.
High
point of 2021: Four assists in Man United's win
over Leeds was a remarkable achievement, but Pogba's best performance of the
year came against Germany at Euro 2020 for France. His incredible cross-field
pass led to Mats Hummels' own goal. Which Pogba played from midfield for the
rest of the game.

Scouting
Report: Already close to being finished article, Foden is
very lively and always wants the ball to be played into his feet or chased to
the defense. When not in possession, he tries hard to get it back. Equipped
with a graceful left foot, high football intelligence and the ability to work
efficiently between the lines, it is no surprise that the England man has
blossomed under Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff.
High
Point of 2021: Foden's year could be booked for
two matches against Liverpool. 9 during a 4–1 win at Anfield in February, he
scored one and assisted another. Eight months later at the same ground, he made
another fine strike and ended the United Man of the Match in a 2–2 draw.

it is sometimes forgotten how good Muller is in the air and How hard he works
defensively on the team. Although he rarely does anything flashy, most of his
involvement is clear, precise, and with purpose. He is also an excellent
communicator and has quite the character off the field as well.
High
point of 2021: Perhaps Müller's biggest moment
was his recall of Germany. After being ignored for three years by Joachim Low,
Müller's club form led to his return against Denmark on 2 June – 927 days of
his previous national-team game – and he remained integral under Hansi Flick.
Club
/ country: Manchester United / Portugal
Age: 27
2020
rank: 3
Scouting
Report: The Portugal international arrived to tremendous
impact two years ago, immediately delivering a high amount of scoring and
assists. He scored 28 goals in 58 games in all competitions last season,
although Fernandes has recently found it difficult to reproduce that form. When
at his best, the former Sporting CP star is a high-energy midfielder who is
often the team's dynamo in the last third, always looking to land the ball or
score runs in the box. He can score from almost anywhere and is good at
providing an excellent, improvised pass or assist through an early cross.
High
point of 2021: It's been a tough season for Man
United, but Fernandes provides some highlights: Champions League assists for
Cristiano Ronaldo against Young Boys and Atalanta, as does hat-trick against
Leeds at Premier It's the opening weekend of the league.

Kevin De Bruyne
Club
/ country: Manchester City / Belgium
Age: 30
2020

Scouting
reports: Some players continue to improve well into their 20s,
but De Bruyne has steadily added or intensified features to his game over the
past decade. Now 30, the Manchester City star is a technically prolific
playwright who is so insightful and direct in the execution of his ideas that
it is nearly impossible for opponents to keep up. Extremely adept at finding
space between the lines and surprisingly adept at spotting runs, the Belgium
international can pass a ball with both feet almost to perfection.
High
point of 2021: De Bruyne starts the year in peak
form: Brilliant as the "wrong No. 9" in January's win at Chelsea, he
went on to take on Ruben Dias against West Ham a month later for arguably the
season. Accepted the pass, then scored a special left footed goal against
Mönchengladbach in March.

Scouting
Report: Although the big stars keep flocking to Paris, the
Argentine legend continues to find time to play. His excellent left foot,
dangerous cross, quick body movement and smart movement without the ball are
well-known. Di Maria is a quality player who has put behind his poor season at
Man United in 2014-15 and now guarantees excellence and effort.
High
point of 2021: A stunning lob in the Copa
America final gave Argentina a win over hosts Brazil and an end to years of
underwhelming and disappointment. Di Maria kept his cool on 22 minutes to
clinch the first major trophy since 1993 and secure himself forever in national
folklore.

Scouting
Report: The owner of one of the best left legs in the sport
is also pretty decent with his weak leg. The former Leicester star likes to
lift the ball wide to the right before moving to the middle, often scoring with
a curved effort. Despite being a good link-up player and having a solid record
as an impact substitute, the Alger international has been under-utilized by
City this season.
High
point of 2021: Mahrez was a key force in Man
City's Premier League title win but actually starred in the Champions League.
After winning goals against Borussia Dortmund and PSG in the quarterfinal and
semifinal away legs respectively, their second leg double against the French
club made it to City's first final.

breakthrough, it is only a matter of time before the Spain international has
been picked up by one of Europe's top clubs. A hardworking wide man, Ouarzabal
can work as a conventional winger on the left or in the cut area from the
right. The Real Sociedad captain has a difficult time knocking out the ball and
is a skilled finisher when it comes to central areas (he also scores with odd
headers). He is also a free-kick specialist.
High
point of 2021: He helped Spain reach Euro 2020
semi-finals, score in Olympic men's and UEFA Nations League finals and is
riding high with Real Sociedad in LaLiga, but Oyarzarbal's standout moment was
that penalty Which settled an all-Basque Copa del Rey final to earn La Real's

rank: 10 (attacking midfield)
Scouting
Report: Grealish is yet to hit heights from his Aston Villa
after a £100m move to Manchester City this summer. More used than a natural
winger, Grealish is exceptionally good at the ball and plays football with a
natural intuition. Being able to beat his opponents with quick, creative
footwork or clever one-two, it is easy to see that the England international
was highly rated by City boss Guardiola for his ability to generate numerical
advantage in key attacking areas Is. He probably needs more time to adjust to
the movement of his new teammates but his raw talent is evident.
High
point of 2021: Grealish started the summer by
starring in England's final pre-Euro 2020 friendly against Romania, then
established himself as a fan during the tournament itself and made the move to
Man City.

Scouting
report: For many years, Insigne has been one of the best
players in Serie A, but he hasn't deserved praise overseas (possibly due to
Napoli's somewhat poor Champions League record). A nimble, and technically
prolific, winger – who is most dangerous when allowed to move the ball on his
right foot – he is surprisingly creative and hasn't let his lack of size (at 5
foot-4) stop him. Have given. ,
High
Point of 2021: In the Euro 2020 quarterfinal
against heavily-hardened Belgium, Insigne scored with a brilliant goal to
capture Italy's first half. From inside the Belgian half, he ran forward, then
cut into open space inside Yuri Tielemens and made a surprise effort behind

the Spanish giants this season, combining well with Karim Benzema.
High
point of 2021: Resurrection under Carlo

their Brazilian star and then produced a brilliant cross for Benzema to lead
the winner.

Alternates between the three positions. The Germany international is difficult
to stop in a one versus one position, helps defensively and communicates well
with his full back.
High
point of 2021: In October, Bayern Munich faced a

hosts were blown away by a spectacular five-goal in the first half, with Gnabry

Scouting
Report: Still one of the best forwards in the world while
dribbling over defenders with the ball, Sterling has a deceptive running style
and is able to maneuver out of congested areas with skill. He enjoys getting
the ball behind the opposing back line and his opening moves in wide areas are
often a clever way for Manchester City to establish possession of the pitch. He
also has a good goal-scoring record with nearly 100 in the Premier League since
making his debut for Liverpool in 2011–12.
High
Point of 2021: Sterling was arguably England's
mainstay at Euro 2020, scoring three goals in addition to countless attacking
appearances. Nothing underlines that role more than securing his country's
opening goal of the tournament to seal a tense 1-0 win over Croatia.

Scouting
Report: Chiesa's position for Juventus and Italy has risen in
recent months. Often being sacrificed halfway through the second half, the
winger is now seen as a difference-maker and a big match player. One of the
most effective counter-attacks in Italy, he moves so fast with the ball and
with his precise left foot alone can set a match.
High
point of 2021: Chiesa arguably became Juventus'
favorite, but really came out with Italy. After starting Euro 2020 on the
bench, he scored against Austria as a substitute, then made himself an
automatic starter. His brilliant semi-final effort against Spain was one of the
goals of the tournament.

Sadio Mane

Age: 29

Scouting
Report: A remarkably fast and nimble forward who is as good
at blowing past defenders as he is setting up and partaking in clever
combinations in and around the penalty area. On counter-attacks Mane is able to
gain an edge over his opponent by making rapid changes in direction before
dodging past. A great finisher who is able to turn his chances from most angles
or positions, he has almost gymnastic balance and control over his body.
High
Point of 2021: Mane's Liverpool 100th goal
against Crystal Palace in September also set him a Premier League record for
scoring in nine consecutive games against the same opponent. A month later,
Mane netted against Watford to become the third African to achieve triple
figures in the Premier League.

a few touches as he likes to drift into the space on the right side of the box,
placing the ball in the far corner with his left foot. He scored 23 league

High
Point of 2021: This was the year when Moreno
came into the limelight around the world. He scored seven goals in Villarreal's
Europa League-winning campaign, including a goal against Manchester United in
the final, when he touched Dani Parejo's free kick near David de Gea to help

Ajax machinery. Usually, Tadic things happen when he wanders down the middle of
the pitch to see the ball. In 2021, he averaged four key passes per game
(though the notoriously open Dutch league supposedly provides generous stats
for attacking players), and scored an equally strong 2.8 chances per match. He
is also a good crosser of the ball.
High
point of 2021: It couldn't get better for Ajax
than to beat fellow Dutch giants, archers and title contenders PSV Eindhoven

scored the first two goals, then later himself scored the fifth.

Scouting
report: Havertz struggled to live up to expectations after a
€79.4m move from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea in 2020, but he won over fans by
scoring the winner against Man City in the Champions League final. Despite his
slow progress, the playwright from Germany still shows enough in brightness to
suggest that an eventual breakthrough is just around the corner. A highly
intelligent, versatile and technically proficient footballer, he is at his best
when it comes to picking up the ball in front of an opponent's defensive line.
High
point of 2021: Whatever Havertz goes on to
achieve, the Champions League finalist at 21 will be hard to beat. After Mason
Mount made his run behind the Man City defence, Havertz overtook the ball with
one to Ederson. Touch, glorified Chelsea before a straight finish.

Scouting
Report: The former Manchester United man is coming of age,
improving steadily after two years of unsuccessful spells at Old Trafford have
seen him blossom at Lyon since 2017. A well-rounded attacker with an excellent
right foot, Depay is a top finisher in his own right and equally skilled at
setting up his teammates – often with just a few touches (he makes a
respectable 2.5 key passes per game). .) Not only an exceptionally talented
footballer, the Netherlands international is also now a leader in a young
Barcelona side.
High
point of 2021: Memphis has made its dream move
to Barcelona and looks astounded by the colossal task of replacing Lionel
Messi. His opening performance was spirited and carefree and his first
competitive goal for the club – an unmistakable, left-footed near-post rocket
against Athletic Bilbao – was spectacular.

to move across the entire front line (though he prefers to start on the left),
the South Korea international is almost a one-man attack. Moreover, he is a
good finisher, very quick and is able to convert his ideas into the final
product in seconds.
High
point of 2021: He moves in the absence of Harry

attacking triangle. That said, there are few forwards who match Neymar for
technical ability and pure personal quality: his dribbling skills and variety
of link-up play are of the highest order.
High
point of 2021: Neymar has been instrumental in
Brazil's World Cup qualification but PSG had a mixed start to the season as he
developed understandings with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. However, after

he can miraculously strike the ball with the ball. reappears. Liverpool have
seen the best of his fine balance and off-the-ball moves, while his finishing
skills seem to come handy even from tight angles.
High
Point of 2021: Salah has been in sensational
form since the start of the current season, but he displayed his exceptional
talent with a hat-trick in Liverpool's massive 5-0 win over Manchester United
in October. He was the first visiting player since Ronaldo Nazario to score a

Referred to receiving- fast movements. Although naturally right footed, he is
almost equally skilled with the opposite leg. So slick and sophisticated in
front of the goal, the Frenchman went in any way imaginable. He is
exceptionally fast over short and medium distances and glides smoothly past
opponents with minimal effort.
High
Point of 2021: A surprise hat-trick against

Mbappe's lead against European champions Bayern Munich in the next round was

Portugal international is intelligent, athletic and multi-skilled, used to
making a difference despite the ball's low touch. Even at 36, he has the
ability to do something special when it really matters, as Manchester United
have been grateful for this season. One of the best headers of the ball with a

High

dribbling looks like the ball is sticking to his foot.
High
point of 2021: You might think that was the

making him come out on top more and more often. His right foot is still one of
the best in Serie A, he makes smart runs for open space for his teammates and
can always be relied on to catch the ball (and win free-kick). Although
injuries have kept Ibrahimovic out for a long time, he remains the leader and
talisman of this resurgent AC Milan side.
High
Point of 2021: Making this list at only 40 could
be considered the highlight of Ibrahimovic's year, but he smells title glory
with Milan and is showing no signs of slowing down. His signing moment came in
October, when he scored his 400th career league goal with a free kick against

he is now developing a good sense of opportunism in front of goal. He strikes
the ball with enormous power and can score well outside the penalty area even
on a direct free-kick.
High
Point of 2021: This was the breakout year Isaac
had been waiting for. He flourished at Real Sociedad, scoring 17 league goals
last season and winning his first silverware with the club, the Copa del Rey.
He carried that form with him to Euro 2020 where he was a standout in Sweden's

Age: 34

Scouting
Report: After being let go of something casual by Barcelona, Suarez
immediately contributed heavily to Atletico Madrid's successful LaLiga title
campaign with 21 league goals. Although Uruguay doesn't turn as frequently as
before, it is exceptionally good at scoring its runs behind the opposing
defensive line. At 34, he is as passionate and as good a finisher as he ever
was, especially taking the ball past an aggressive goalkeeper; Some do better
than that.
High
Point of 2021: Since joining Atletico, Suarez
has made a habit of scoring late winners and his most important will come in
May. Real Madrid were set to claim the top spot in LaLiga during the final
round of the game, only for the 34-year-old to slot at home in the 88th minute.
Atleti has never looked back.

Harry Kane
Club
/ country: Tottenham / England
Age: 28
2020
rank: 4
Scouting
Report: One of the best all-round centre-forwards in the
game. Kane is not only a brilliant finisher with both feet (he scores from
outside the penalty area even with his weaker leg) and has a terrific aerial
game, he also does a good job outside the box by finding the right spot between
the lines . In the previous season he made further declines in the league and
made 14 assists, while still scoring 23 goals himself, and could put his
teammates in prime attacking positions through quick touches, lay-offs and
flicks, usually performed with high speed and accuracy. A leader from the
front.
High
Point of 2021: Kane played a key role in
England's Euro 2020 final run after a slow start. There were goals against
Germany and Ukraine, but their finest moment came in the semi-final against
Denmark. In extra time, Kane saw his penalty saved by Kaspar Schmeichel, but he
kept his nerve to convert the rebound.
Club

Scouting
report: The Belgium international scored an impressive 47
Serie A goals in two seasons for Inter and was one of the driving forces behind
the club's Scudetto victory in 2020-21. With space ahead almost impossible to
catch while running on passes, he has also developed his game as a target
hunter and makes some great decisions in the box. He is hard to beat in the
air, while during his time in Italy he improved his first touch and his ability
to play with his back to score.
High
point of 2021: Lukaku made his dream comeback,
returning to Chelsea seven years after his first stint in London ended. After
saying that he only wanted to leave Inter, with whom he won Serie A, because
the club he supported "as a child" wanted him, he scored at Arsenal
with a goal within 15 minutes. Made his (second) Chelsea debut.
Club

Scouting
Report: The Frenchman seems to be getting progressively
better with age and has arguably been in the form of his life in 2021 with 14
goals in 15 appearances this season. A complete centre-forward without obvious
weaknesses who works hard for the team and moves very well without the ball,
Benzema often chooses a delicate finish over a powerful one. He plays with
great confidence and charisma, and has stood out as a leader for Real Madrid in
recent years.
High
point of 2021: Real Madrid had a rough year and
France faced mixed fortunes, but Benzema never stopped scoring. He returned to
the national team after a six-year absence and finished Euro 2020 with four
goals, then scored in the semi-finals and final as Les Blaes won the Nations
League.
Club

Age: 21

Scouting
Report: From being just a straight centre-forward who would
advance to a pass at the end of a pass, Haaland is slowly developing into a
more complete striker. While his appetite for playing off the shoulders of the
defenders will always be there, he has improved his touch on the ball, his
take-offs are more precise, his headers are more objectively directed and he
seems to have enhanced his approach to the game. Is. around him. That said, his
powerful left leg is still his No. 1 weapon and his incredible physique will
always be a mouthful for defenders.
The
High Point of 2021: "Give Me Champagne!" As Borussia Dortmund
celebrate winning the German Cup in May, Haaland roars. And he deserved the

BVB's first major trophy in four years.

Scouting
report: Without doubt the No. 1 out-and-out centre-forward in
the game for the past decade, his 317 goals in 346 games since joining Bayern
for free in 2014-15 speaks for itself. He excels through perfect positioning,
coolness of execution (usually with one or two touches) and resourceful use of
his head, or either foot. The Poland international maps out his immediate
surroundings before receiving the ball and makes the best decision to proceed.
His physical strength, movement and fine first touch make him a first-class
hold-up player, while he scored an incredible 22 consecutive goals from an
uninterrupted run of 14 games earlier in the year.
High
point of 2021: "LewanGOALski" broke
Gerd Müller's 49-year record for goals scored in a single Bundesliga season,
doing so even faster than the Bayern legend, notching 41 goals in just 29
matches, or 1.41 goals per game. Lewandowski still trails Müller for total
goals, but expect him to catch up fast.

83% from his one-and-a-half year in charge. Now he has got a chance to do the
same for the Germany national team.
High
point of 2021: Flick's biggest moment was being

Scouting
Report: There are few head coaches who have experienced the
same extreme ups and downs as Emery. From winning three Europa League titles
with Sevilla, often ridiculed at both Paris Saint-Germain (despite leading them
to the league title) and Arsenal, to getting his career back on track by
winning the Europa League with Villarreal. For all the human-management and
communication vulnerabilities that his opponents throw at him, Emery clearly
knows how to mentally prepare teams before big games and his brand of football
(when it works) is nothing short of splendid.
High
point of 2021: Emery's mastery in the Europa
League continued when Villarreal's 11-10 penalty shootout win over Man United
saw them win the trophy for the fourth time. This was El Submarino Amarillo's
first piece of silver since the 2004 Intertoto Cup victory and showed his
manager's tactical abilities.
4.
Diego Simeone
Team: Atletico Madrid
Age: 51
2020
rank: 7
Scouting

greater tactical flexibility (even playing with three on occasion) and
controlling more possession than before. His actions on the side don't lie: he
is as passionate and passionate about football as he appears.
High
point of 2021: Simeone manages to cement his
position as Atletico lead LaLiga title - his second at the club. For key
moments, watch their closing games; A late goal against Osasuna set up a
two-point lead with a game to spare, before a comeback win saw Valladolid take
the win on the final day.
5.
Julian Nagelsmann
Team: Bayern Munich (with RB Leipzig until June)
Age: 34
2020
rank: 5
Scouting
Report: Seen by many as a bold appointment by Bayern, but
judging from the first six months of his tenure, pragmatism has been the
keyword. Nagelsmann, who began his career as a head coach at the age of 28, has
stuck with a 4-2-3-1 formation, but has made a free-flowing team even faster
and smoother. Time must prove that the former RB Leipzig man is a highly
innovative coach who isn't afraid to mold the German giants into his shape.
High
point of 2021: After leading RB Leipzig to the
semi-finals of the Champions League in 2020, Nagelsmann was the clear successor
to Hansi Flick at Bayern and has already come comfortably into his new role,
which includes a 4-over victory over his former employers. There are remarkable

while ending Juventus' nine-year hold on the title. An animated manager at

High
point of 2021: Conte directs Inter for first
scudetto in 10 years; The win, which he described as "one of the most
important successes" of his career, ended Juventus' nine-year struggle
over the Serie A title and came despite financial uncertainty behind the scenes
at the Nerazzurri.

Team: Liverpool
Age: 54
2020
rank: 1
Scouting
Report: Klopp's fingerprints on Liverpool are as clear as
ever after six years at Merseyside. Liverpool still plays with the confidence,
dominance and intensity usually associated with a new manager's honeymoon
period. Apart from being a prolific man-manager, the German has also formed a
strong bond with supporters and really understands the culture of the club and
the city.
High
point of 2021: Klopp's biggest achievement is
securing Champions League football for the 2021-22 season despite the long-term
absence of several key players, but then the day came in October when Liverpool
went to Old Trafford and scored five times . To humiliate Man United.

Roberto Mancini
Team: Italy
Age: 57

Scouting
Report: Azzurri's win at Euro 2020 was in every way a
coaching victory as it was down to the players. Organized in a flexible 4-3-3
formation - with changes in both defense and attack - Mancini made Italy look
like an elite club side. Every player was aware of his duties and whoever
stepped in performed as well as the player disappeared.
High
point of 2021: In the Euro 2020 final at Wembley
on 11 July, Mancini mastered Italy's first European Championship title in 53
years as they recovered from the opening goal to score and then beat England on
penalties. So, thank you for the heroism of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Pep Guardiola
Team: Manchester City
Age: 50

rank: 3
Scouting
report: Guardiola is still chasing the Champions League
trophy at Manchester City - trying to attack too much in the final against
Chelsea last year when he finally had a shot at him - yet he's still going to
win it approaching. Year. Guardiola's team plays some of the most fluid, easy
on the eye football at the highest level. Among all his other admirable skills,
the Catalan still manages to transform good players into brilliant, all-round
footballers. He has also shown how to cope without a central striker this
season with a 4-3-3 formation and the "wrong number 9".
High
point of 2021: City's latest Premier League
title was the club's third in four seasons under Guardiola. Their best result
of the year was a 4–1 win at Liverpool in February, but 21 consecutive
victories - from December 2020 to March 2021 - set a record for the English top
flight.

team that Played with structure and speed. , Switching to 3-4-3 brought a
better balance to the team and was friendly to almost every member of the team,
who looked like the players on the road to Champions League success.
High
point of 2021: After being sacked by PSG a month
earlier, Tuchel took over Chelsea in January and won the Champions League by
June. He changed fortunes that night at Stamford Bridge and at Porto, where he
overcame Pep Guardiola in what goes down as the biggest achievement of his
career.
