'This is Us' saves another surprise for its wedding-episode season finale
This Is Us "included" Dynasties "the infamous 1985 wedding-massacre Cliffhanger in the finale of its wedding-episode season, which showcases a sense of humor and an element of TV sweetheart. It is perhaps time to let go, paving the way for its final season, rather than reinforcing the meaning given by another pair of.
The concluding chapter of the fifth season was directed towards the marriage of Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Kaitlyn Thompson), in a slightly awkward union that has taken place since the birth of their twins. Yet Kevin's reaction to a marriage quiz at the last minute reinforced Madison's fear that his heart might not actually be in it, leading to a confrontation situation that seemed inevitable as the hour went on. Passed
"I can't marry someone who doesn't love me," Madison finally declares, when Kevin proves incapable of uttering those three little words.
"Couldn't say that to her," she admitted in front of her family, when everything had stopped. "Could not lie to him."
As is often the case with this Emmy-nominated NBC drama, however, wait, there's more. The story then moves on several years, to another marriage, this time involving Kevin's sister Kate (Chrissy Metz), who is going through her real-time crisis in relation to her current husband Toby (Chris Sullivan).
Alas, those two plots - which have taken center stage through parts of the season - rank among the less interesting that have gotten the show into this complex year, with series creator Dan Fogelman and his team calling the coronovirus epidemic their story incorporated in . They reflect the show's attempts to attract a twisting jump back and forth over time, a juggle that has probably begun to make an inevitable low return.
The actual highlights of the finale were small in scale, but no less significant, in the show's dense narrative. Rebecca (Mandy Moore) apologizes to her son Randall (Sterling K. Brown) for hiding information about her birth parents, as the most recent phase of her personal journey leads her to her biological mother.
"I've let you off the hook many times," he said.
Elsewhere, Randall's wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) is engaged in sweet exchanges with their daughter, Tess (Aris Baker), as Tess poses as a lesbian and begins dating a non-classmate. Had done it.
Those sequences represent the beautifully played, tear-exchanged exchanges for which the show is famous - and the more swing-for-the-fens that flourish, as Kevin is left at the altar.
Some stunts never go out of style, and it's worth noting that the VCR argument between Rebecca and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) is no longer an issue, as that untouched "Dynasty" episode would have been streaming somewhere the next day.
With its various hooks past, present and future, "This Is Us" still has plenty of room to navigate its sixth and final season. Yet while Pearson's problems are not over, the season finale only underscores why some viewers - including this one - welcome the idea of the show ending, before their patience runs out. Lets do it.
