‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Finale: Creator & Cast On Tonight’s Jolting Twist & “Ambitious” Final Season Which Will Tie Up All Loose Ends – Update
Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the season 5 finale of NBC's This Is Us.
Here we are at the Rose Bowl, updated with comments from the Amy FYC event: During an early flashback to tonight's This Is Us Season 5 finale, Mandy Moore's Rebecca Pearson to watch the finale of ABC's Dynasty Wedding Season She sat down.
"Okay, dynasty, let's kill some friggin 'wedding guests!" She screams with her wine, popcorn, and M&M placed in front of her.
Unaware of Rebecca, she is anticipating what is going to happen tonight. While no wedding guests are killed, two marriages break up. At the present time, it is Kevin and Madison (Justin Hartley and Caitlin Thompson) who decide not to tie the knot. However, we also learn in a flash-forward that Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) do not work. read on.
After a season in which some of Kevin's old girlfriends were returning to his life, his future with his children's mother Madison overshadowed his dark clouds; It is she who mustered the courage to let her star husband come to Jesus on their relationship tonight. In her bones, Madison always knew that Kevin didn't love her.
She vents her feelings on him four hours before the wedding, closing the earrings that her mother had left to her before leaving the family.
Madison told Kevin, "He left me with a father who gave me nothing, who literally told me not to expect a magical spark in life," I have gratefully accepted through a life That no one would accept me with a scrap of affection.
"Your family has given me the first family ever, and it will be so easy for me to tip-toe around the fact that you can't love me," she adds, "I can't marry anyone Hai who doesn't love me… you know it. "
All of this raises the question of whether Kevin will ever marry in the remaining episodes of This Is Us.
"It's going to be a big thing that will propel us into the next season: How will Kevin wind up? Will he end up with someone we know? Does he mix with anyone at all? One way or the other. The question will be answered, ”producer Dan Fogelman said on Tuesday morning.
He later elaborated during this Is Us FYC panel. "We want to see our attractive, larger-than-life man centered, and if not love, find something in his romantic journey that feels complete and complete. It doesn't mean [everyone] gets married. Is. I think hopefully those who are ready for this character will be satisfied. "
But Kevin and Madison's break-up tonight was hardly the biggest surprise. Along with This Is Us Final, it is the flash-forward final moments that are the biggest jaw droppers. The set-up for tonight's final twist is set in the opening shot: We see Kevin in a mirror to see what his wedding vows look like; He is also cribbing lines from Peter Cook's hysterical marriage speech from The Princess Bride. At the end of the episode we return to this moment of Kevin in front of the mirror, all ready for marriage.
But, wait, didn't Madison just cancel the wedding? It turns out that we are seeing Kevin four years in the future. Whose wedding is it? Kevin? This is Kate's second! And groom? Why, this is Philip (Chris Gere), Kate's evil boss. He was the one who mentioned that he would never have her as a music teacher.
In a flash-forward, Kevin exits the bathroom where he is making his speech. On the bed stand we get a glimpse of an open New Yorker profile titled "Rising Star" on his brother Randall (Sterling K. Brown). He walks out of the room. Nikki comes to the corner with Randall. Before Kevin could say anything, Nikki said, "I know, I know, I'm getting ready, but the wife wanted stockings, what else should I do?" Boom. At the same time, we find out that Nikki finally gets married. Is it possibly for Rebecca? We will have to wait and see. Kevin has an exchange with Randall about how much he likes the New Yorker article.
Kevin then goes to the hotel room where Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Madison dress up as bridesmaids. Given their fickle exchanges, it seems that everything is good with them even years after Kevin and Madison break up. Although very fickle, it makes us wonder if they finally wake up again, even though Madison has pulled the plug on tonight's wedding. Then we see Kate from head to toe in a wedding gown. "This is the last time I'm doing this," Kate says.
Kevin leaves Beth and Madison's room and confronts Philip in the hallway. Kevin asks Philip about his wedding speech: "Hey, listen, you're fine if I make some British jokes at your expense, right?"
"If you can't take urine out of your future brother-in-law, then who can you take out the urine from?" Answer Philip.
Earlier in the episode, we learn that Toby got a job with a start-up company that would keep him in San Francisco three days a week. He needs to take the job: Not only is Kate and he struggling financially, but he is eager to get back to work. Meanwhile, this puts her in a position where she has to leave her job of choice and stay at home with the children. Kate telephoned Philip and submitted his resignation.
Philip tells Kate, "I didn't want to put you to work. I stuck with you. An inexperienced aid without any qualifications or skills ... and yet, you became great. Students love you. You You are talented, you are useful and on rare occasions your jokes are funny. So, no, I do not accept your resignation. "
Addressing the entire blast of Kate's finale with Phillip, Fogelman said "Chris (Gire) is going to be a big part of the show next year" which seems to be a regular role for a series.
"It's an actor we've been following for quite some time and a big fan of the show, which is clearly a story point that we know it was a long time coming - Kate's second marriage - and we Knew it would be revealed at the end of this season, ”the EP added.
If you recall, in the season 3 finale, we saw Toby arriving at Kevin's house, a wedding gathering, without a wedding ring on his finger.
"Obviously we've hinted at the dark future many times that something is not common between Chrissy and Sully," Fogelman said.
"Ultimately it's an optimistic show," Fogelman said, "despite two wedding revelations not quite working, everyone feels good when you cut that period in the future. On first viewing, You are recording the twist and shock of what you are seeing, but on second look, you can see the emotion and smile present in that moment. ”
As far as rising star Randall eventually becomes, Fogelman says "I can't say too much", but in the final season "Randall and Beth have a career to make." Unlike season one when Randall was at odds with himself as he tried to have a relationship with his original father, the next season's audience would get "a more focused and balanced Randall", Fogelman added.
"All these timelines will be brought to a conclusion and explained," Fogelman promised about the previous season, "There will be no question when we get through the next season. Everything will be settled. "
He also told us tonight that Season 6 is going to be "jumping in more time than we already have".
This includes the flash forward we've seen in the past where Rebecca is lying on a hospital bed with Nikki (Griffin Dunne), without Miguel (John Huertas). Per Fogelman "courtship, and coming together and final separation, and then Rebecca and Miguel coming back together" is a big part of the final season.
The producer said, "Mandy's going to have a tremendously ambitious season as an actress next year," as you're crossing these timelines in the future and a character struggling with Alzheimer's, it's quite a young woman There is going to be a showcase that is doing something extraordinary on television. "
Fogelman further stated on tonight's Emmy FYC event, that the final season is going to be "an animal" for Moore and we'll see Rebecca "battling through various stages of a disease".
Not only Moore, but overall the cast of Fogleman "has some very soulful things to dig into next year. I think like everything on our show, we're able to find something difficult and find something beautiful inside it Are going to happen. "
"You can't always claim that 100% of the audience will like every single decision you make for the characters, but I don't think anything will be left on the table," the EP said, "So all the places you go. Having said that, all future deadlines that you have visited, all of them will be resolved. "
Apart from this, we will also take some resolution on Deja and Malik's relationship. There was a flash forward from some time in which Deja Pregnant was seen. We came to know tonight that Malik got admission at Harvard. That is, the long distance relationship between the couple.
Fogelman said, "We always knew that Season 6 would be ambitious the way it bounces, and more ambitious than the other seasons. Because our audience is so dedicated, and I think because hopefully We will cleverly set up the areas where these future deadlines remain, I think you are going to have a real sense of resolve and fulfillment for this family.
Tonight summarized Moore, as we move into the final lap of This Is Us, "Patience will be rewarded."

In keeping with the tradition of the Emmy season, NBC / 20th TV tonight hosted a This Is Us Finale drive-in screening at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, followed by a panel with the cast. At the end of the discussion, Moore and Metz, who were present, and Brown, Hartley, and Sullivan, who were prerecorded, offered an explanation of where their characters were going, or what they were expecting. Here are his answers:
Mandy Moore: I hope Rebecca has the ability to grace herself and her loved ones, and has a true, deep outlook on her life and legacy. And I hope he is able to be as present as possible given the circumstances. "
Sterling K. Brown: "I hope he is able to find a closure. I think he is on a journey to the finale in relation to self-acceptance, knowing that he is of value, he needs to prove himself. Not, but a deep lasting knowledge that he belongs to. What I am looking for is Randall, it is closed. "
Justin Hartley: "I would say that there are a lot of recon connections in season 6 (for Kevin)".
Susan Kelechi Watson: "I'm not really dead, I'm still here with you, and I'll be with you forever. 'Yes, that's it.'" This is a reference to the great tees coming into the 2018-19 season That we were ready to see Beth's death as the next big mystery after the resolution on Jack's death.
Chris Sullivan: Toby's arc will be "transformational" in the final season.
Chrissy Metz: "A lot of what Sterling said is the same thing Kate is doing, but a lot. Very different way. I think she's found confidence in a way she's never found before. I think That this [his arc] would be true happiness- I think.
In closing, Fogelman said, "I think we're going to try and make something really beautiful that makes people feel full and warm, [something that is] the beauty of the sadness that fills our lives. Fills ... [something like that] would make people want to have a baby or call their parents. I think our intention was always to finish the show. We really got some cute Going to try to pull. "
