Sources have told ESPN that Arsenal are in talks to sign Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares.
The 21-year-old is seen as a back-up option for Kieran Tierney, who last week agreed a new five-year contract with the club.
Benfica have valued Tavares around €12 million, but Arsenal are confident of striking a deal for less with a player looking to move to the Premier League.
Talks are on for Tavares, who made 24 appearances for Benfica last season, including a five-minute substitute against Arsenal in the second leg of the Europa League round-of-32 in February.
Tavares is seen as an attack-minded full-back who can make a positive impact in the last third in the same mold as two other left-backs the club signed in January: Ryan Bertrand and Patrick van Anholt.
Bertrand and Van Anholt will both become free agents next week when their contracts expire at Southampton and Crystal Palace respectively.
Bertrand is headed to Leicester City, while Van Anholt is linked with Galatasaray. Both players are looking for a chance to compete in regular first-team football but Tavares is young and ready to wait for his opportunity.
Arsenal need to strengthen cover in the left-back position, as Sead Kolasinac deemed surplus to need to come back from loan at Schalke and midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was previously deputed as a left wing-back, There is also a possibility of leaving the club.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have rejected Aston Villa's second offer for Emile Smith Rowe. The bid was considered to be £30m - an increase of £5m on their first attempt - and was rejected out of hand by Arsenal, who remain in talks to extend the 20-year contract.
