A goal from Chile's Arturo Vidal in the middle of the second half gave Uruguay their first goal in five games and a point in a thrilling 1-1 Copa América on Monday.
Between them, Chile and Uruguay have won three of the last four Copa America tournaments, but both sides have failed to set up this tournament. Uruguay did not get a shot on target in their opening 1–0 loss to Argentina, while Chile drew with Argentina and then beat Bolivia 1–0.
Thankfully, both teams showed a little more enthusiasm on a hot and humid night in central Brazil.
Chile got off to a better start and went ahead after 26 minutes thanks to Eduardo Vargas. Vargas did a good job with Ben Brereton before hitting an unassailable shot at goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.
It was Vargas' 14th goal in the tournament, making him the joint-fifth top goal scorer, only three goals behind the leaders at 17.
Uruguay had not scored in their last four matches before tonight, but they kept rising as the game progressed and secured a decent draw in the middle of the second half.
Mattias Vesino nodded in a corner in the six-yard box and Luis Suarez slammed Vidal as the ball hit the roof of the net.
The goal was first awarded to Suarez, but it was then classified as his own goal and was changed moments later after Vidal complained that he had been fouled by his former teammate at Barcelona.
There was some controversy before the game, with Chile admitting some of their players - Vidal was later named as one - breaking the bubble established to contain the spread of COVID-19.
As the game progressed, Uruguay topped the table and continued to search for a winner, with both Suarez and Edison Cavani getting closer.
But neither side could score a decisive goal and so Chile finished top of Group A with five points from three games, one ahead of Argentina, who play Paraguay later on Monday.
Paraguay has three points from a game, while Uruguay has one and Bolivia has no point after two. The top four from each five-team group qualify for the quarter-finals.
