Ronald Hernandez scored his first international goal in stoppage time as Venezuela pulled off a dramatic 2-2 draw against Ecuador in their Copa America match on Sunday.
The result means that Ecuador has one point from two games in Group B and Venezuela has two points from three.
It promises a nail-biting finale in a group that also includes Brazil, Colombia and Peru, with four of the five teams going into the quarterfinals.
Ecuador and Venezuela are the only teams in South America that have never won a Copa America and although the game in Rio lacked chubby action, the quality of football on show did not suggest that could change this year.
Ecuador had both two-thirds possession and goals, but struggled to convert that dominance into something more meaningful against a loaded Venezuela.
They had not lost to Venezuela for six matches before 2011 and controlled the first half before advancing six minutes before half-time when Ayrton Precido scored a goal inside a packed six-yard box.
Edson Castillo hit a home header after 51 minutes and ran the length of the field for Ecuadorian substitute Gonzalo Plata to equalize on his first international debut for Venezuela, with 19 minutes remaining to give his team 2–1. Gave the lead.
Ener Valencia should have ensured a win when they had only 12 minutes to beat the keeper but Fenerbah's striker widened his shot.
When it looked like Ecuador would escape with all three points, Hernández got into the box to loop a header behind the trapped keeper at the near end of the 40m pass.
