Mark Stoneman has joined Yorkshire as a loan signing for T20 Blast.
Stoneman, Surrey's top-order batsman, is available for five of Yorkshire's last six Blast games, starting with the match against Northants on Saturday. They would return to Surrey before the final group game (against Nottinghamshire on 9 July) to prepare for the County Championship game against Somerset, starting on 11 July.
Yorkshire recently learned they were to be without David Malan for the rest of the tournament's group stages, and were added to England's ODI squad as a replacement for the injured Jos Buttler. The club are on England duty without Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Adil Rashid and David Willey, while Tom Koehler-Cadmore and Will Frain are injured.
Stoneman, who has a modest T20 record (he averages 20.38 with a strike rate of 118.01) has been unable to break into the Surrey T20 squad this season, with Will Jack and Jamie Smith at the top of the order. But liked when Jason Roy was on England duty. He made only one appearance at the Blast last summer.
Yorkshire First XI coach Andrew Gayle said: "With the number of players we are missing now due to England's commitments and injury, we felt we needed to add top-order batsmen to our squad for the later stages of the group. "
"We've had a great start to this year's Vitality Blast and have seen some great contributions from some of our younger players, but it looks like getting an experienced batsman up the top of the order is key to helping keep the momentum going.
"Mark Stoneman definitely fits the bill we were looking for; a veteran who will fit into the top-order. His quality is renowned and we look forward to welcoming him to the team."
Yorkshire are second only to Nottinghamshire in terms of net run rate after eight out of 14 matches.
