CHICAGO — Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout is not expected to play the rest of the season, according to manager Joe Maddon.
Trout, 30, has been out of action since mid-May with a right calf injury. With only weeks left in the regular season, Madden doesn't seem to have time.
"I'm not expecting anything to change with regards to his playing," Maddon said Wednesday afternoon. "I would be very surprised."
Trout's rehabilitation has been slow because of pain in his calf. Maddon indicated that Trout would like to play, but said he doesn't see it happening again until 2022.
"The boy wants to be outside so much," Madon said. "In sports, he's on every pitch. He comes and discusses things with me during the game. He's totally busy."
The three-time MVP injured himself on the basepath for a recovery period of six to eight weeks. But when Trout started running again, he was pushed back as the pain returned. The injury turned out to be more serious than previously thought.
Trout was hitting .333 with 1.090 Ops when he went down. Maddon did not make an official announcement about Trout's end of the season, as he would allow Trout to do so, but said the decision had been made.
"I don't expect him to play today or tomorrow or soon," Maddon said. "He's as excited as he can be."
