Finland suffered a 1-0 loss to Russia in St Petersburg in their second Euro 2020 Group B match on Wednesday after Denmark's Christian Eriksson suffered a cardiac arrest in their first match of the tournament.
Alexei Miranchuk's strike in first-half stoppage time was the difference between the two teams in Finland's first match since their opening win over Denmark on Saturday, which was affected by an incident that stopped play. Finland was wearing a T-shirt for Wednesday's clash that read "Get Well Christian".
Russia were dealt a blow on 25 minutes when defender Mario Fernandes was stripped on a stretcher, but they almost went ahead when substitute Vyacheslav Karaev looked ready for a tap-in, only to be denied by Finland defender Jere Uronen.
Both the teams felt that they could not be separated by going into the break but the deadlock was broken at the stoppage time of the first half. Miranchuk played a clean one-two with Artem Dziuba inside the box, and then picked up a fine strike in the far corner.
Finland would have led 1-0 after only three minutes with a brilliant header from Joel Pohjanpalo, but it was dismissed for offside by VAR. Ten minutes later, Russia missed a chance as Magomed Ozdov's effort went wide.
Finland, who qualified for their first major football tournament, made two late substitutions, with Pyri Soiri replacing Jukka Raitala and Teemu Pukki for Lassi Laplainen, but could not make an effort.
Belgium will face Denmark in the second match of Group B on Thursday. Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmund has said Eriksen will watch the match from the hospital.
Finland's next Group B match is against Belgium in St Petersburg on 21 June, while Russia will take on Denmark in Copenhagen on the same day.
