Peru sealed their place in the last eight of the competition with a 1-0 win over Venezuela in the Copa América on Sunday, early in the second half.
The result means that Peru is second only to hosts Brazil, along with Colombia and Ecuador from Group B. Venezuela were eliminated, finishing bottom after failing to register a win in the group stages.
Ecuador went ahead of Venezuela in the group to claim a draw in the second game of the evening against regional giants Brazil, which failed to win for the first time in 11 games but still topped the group for the quarter-finals.
Peru's Andre Carrillo gave his team the lead after 48 minutes, firing high into the net from close range after scoring from a corner at the empty Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia.
Venezuela could have considered themselves a bit unlucky as the ball swung around the penalty area, including a Venezuelan defender, before being swept into the net by Carrillo, who had saved the draw in the previous game against Ecuador.
The victory ended a game of draw between the two South American nations with another 1–0 victory over Peru in the 2015 Copa América.
The quarter-final matchup will be decided on Monday after the final round of Group A, where Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay have already booked their places in the last eight.
