Andy Murray has pulled out of the men's singles tennis tournament at the Tokyo Olympics due to a quad strain.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist was hoping to defend his title at Tokyo 2020 but has decided to prioritize the men's doubles tournament with Joe Salisbury.
The announcement came ahead of their first scheduled opening-round match against Felix Auger-Aliassim on Sunday. Australia's Max Purcell replaced Murray.
A statement from Team Great Britain said Murray's decision was made "after consultation with medical staff regarding a quad strain."
"I am really disappointed to be back but the medical staff has advised me against playing both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe," Murray said.
Murray and Salisbury advanced to the men's doubles second round on Saturday after a spectacular first round win (6-3, 6-2) over number two seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray advanced to the third round of Wimbledon this month as he continued to make a comeback from hip and groin problems. Murray won gold in men's singles at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, and he also won silver in mixed doubles in 2012 with Laura Robson.
