Mirabai Chanu created history on Saturday by lifting India's first Olympic silver medal in weightlifting by lifting a total of 202kg in the women's 49kg event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Here's what he had to say after his podium finishes.
On whether he felt nervous or stressed:
Yes, there was some tension. I was also nervous, because I knew the country was watching. I just decided to do my best today.
On 2016 performance:
I have learned a lot from my performance there, which is why I am here today. I felt very sad after that Olympics and wanted to improve.
On her immediate plans:
After going to India, I will go home immediately because it has been almost two years since I went home.
Whom did you call after winning the medal?
I called the weightlifters training in Patiala like Jeremy (Lalrinnunga, 2018 Youth Olympic gold medalist). They were very happy and dancing.
On her clean and jerk efforts:
I was looking to improve on my world record but I had some back pain, so I couldn't successfully complete the last lift.
On her celebration plans:
Will have to see what the coach sir says. The rules of the village are very strict so we cannot party.
On the improvements she's made in Snatch:
I have improved my snatch lifts a lot. I could not complete my last lift in snatch in 89kg but I am very happy because I gave my best today.
On being very fond of dance:
Abhi kiya na main thoda bat bat (I did a little jing after winning the medal).
When did you know that the medal was fixed?
Once I successfully completed the second lift in the clean and jerk, I knew that a medal was certain.
