Wimbledon, England - Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens won the women's doubles title by saving two match points against Russian pair of Veronika Kudermatova and Elena Vesnina at Wimbledon on Saturday.
Third-seeded Hsieh and Mertens registered a 3-6, 7-5, 9-7 win on Center Court. They went back-and-forth to win the third set when Hsieh hit the backhand winner to break Vesnina's serve.
"We were so glad we could pull it off because it was just up and running," Mertens said.
It was the third Wimbledon doubles title for Hsieh, all with different partners. It was a first for Mertens, who has also won the Australian Open and US Open doubles.
The unseeded Russian pair had two match points at 5-4 in the second set and also worked to a 7-6 match in the third set.
Mertens also had a chance to serve the match 5-3 in the third match.
"It was such a tough match," Mertens said. "We just kept going. ... We never gave up. That's the fighting spirit we have today that probably made a difference."
Vesnina was looking for a fourth Grand Slam doubles title and second place at Wimbledon. Kudermetova was playing her first Grand Slam final.
Meanwhile, Britain's seventh-seeded Neil Skupski and the United States' Desira Kravczyk have advanced to the mixed doubles final at Wimbledon.
He defeated John Pearce of Australia and Zhang Shuai of China 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 on the No.1 court.
They will play British pair Joe Salisbury and Harriet Dart on Sunday. Salisbury and Dart took the lead on Friday after beating Czech veterans Quetta Peschke and Kevin Kravitz of Germany in three sets.
