The United States women's national team bounced back from their opening loss at the Olympics to register an emphatic 6-1 win over New Zealand at Saitama Stadium on Saturday.
Two own goals, along with Rose Lavelle, Lindsay Horan, Kristen Press and Alex Morgan, sealed the victory for Watko Andonovsky's team.
Betsy Hassett scored a consolation goal for New Zealand, but the USWNT put up a fine performance to secure their first win at the Olympics.
US The opening match went into the game to recover from a shock defeat against Sweden, which ended a 44-game unbeaten run.
"Sweden were a very good team and we didn't do our best, and when you do that against a top opponent, they're going to punish you," Crystal Dunn said after the match.
"So it wasn't our best performance. I think we came into Game 2 knowing we weren't a really great team two days ago, not a great team now."
LaValle gave the USWNT a perfect start nine minutes after receiving a through ball from Tobin Heath and produced a mixed finish.
Horan thought he had doubled the lead after 35 minutes, but his strike was dismissed by VAR for offside.
Just before the break, Horan scored from close range with a header, with an assist from Megan Rapinoe. It was Horan's 23rd international goal and it was a milestone for the national team in their 100th appearance.
At the break, the team was leading 2–0, the U.S. US first lady Jill Biden arrived on time and saw the team take the game away in the second half.
It could have been worse for New Zealand, but America had not allowed four goals for offside in the first half.
The Americans scored the third goal after 63 minutes when Carli Lloyd's flick inside the box was driven into his own goal by AB Erseg.
Nine minutes later, New Zealand took advantage of some poor defense to score through Hassett.
However, the USWNT held on to late attacks from Press and Morgan as well as C.J. to secure a comfortable victory. The bot responded to its target.
"I think my approach is going into the game - obviously it's in the back of your head that you're getting your 100th hat - but I didn't want that to be a factor today," Horan said.
"I think we wanted to get the job done and my focus was doing whatever I could to help the team win. I'm happy to score a goal and yes, it's nice to have a fan in the stands too "
Dunn continued: "I think we were a little bit more restrained in this game, a little more patient on the ball, and we know it's going to be challenging to chase that gold medal. So we're not taking anything lightly. Huh."
America will now face Australia in the final match of Group G.
