Sources have told ESPN that Zinedine Zidane will decline the opportunity to return to club management to take over from Didier Deschamps as coach of the France national team.
As reported at L'Equipe on Friday, sources have said the former Real Madrid manager is ready to wait for Deschamps' tenure to end, whether after the 2022 World Cup or the 2024 European Championship.
Sources have told ESPN that Zidane is in line to become France's head coach. This is their priority and ambition, while they are also excellent candidates once the vacancy is open.
French FA president Nol Le Gret is also keen to hire the former France international and would bring him on this summer if Deschamps decides to step down from the role.
Instead, Le Great confirmed that Deschamps would only last "three minutes" after talks about his future.
Deschamps was under increasing pressure after France's disappointing loss to Switzerland in the round of 16 at Euro 2020, although sources have told ESPN that the national team coach retained Le Great's backing and his contract was due to be looked into.
Deschamps has a contract until December 2022 and can extend his deal until the summer of 2024 if he wants to stay and the results were positive.
He has been in charge of Les Blaes since 2012 and led the national team to World Cup success in Russia in 2014.
Zidane, who has closely followed France's campaign at the euro, which also includes the return of Karim Benzema, is hoping the job will be available in 17 months. However, if Deschamps gets a new deal, he may have to wait more than three years for it.
Zidane, who has spent the past six weeks with his family on a holiday between France and Spain, has already turned down offers from the clubs.
Sources have told ESPN that he was in talks for a job at Juventus after Andrea Pirlo was sacked before Max Allegri returned to the club.
The former France number 10 has also attracted interest from England, but has focused on waiting for France's job.
