A league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Jacksonville Jaguars are indefinitely ousting rookie Travis Etienne, who suffered a midfoot sprain in Monday night's preseason loss to the Saints in New Orleans.
Etienne's injured left leg will require further testing, the source told Schaffter. The rookie was seen wearing a protective boot after the game.
According to ESPN injury analyst Stefania Bell, midfoot sprains can vary widely in terms of recovery time, and a big factor will be whether it is considered stable or unstable during treatment.
Etienne caught a pass for 3 yards and ran the ball once for 1 yard before injury.
The Jaguars drafted Etienne 25th overall in April, and coach Urban Mayer said he planned to line up at receivers in addition to running him back the same way Meyer used Percy Harwin in Florida.
Etienne left Clemson as the ACC's all-time leading rusher (4,752 yards).
