Wolfsburg have been ruled out of the German Cup because they fielded too many substitutes in their first-round victory over Preissen Münster.
The German football federation said on Monday that its sports court had decided to reverse Wolfsburg's 3-1 win and give the fourth division team a 2-0 victory.
Wolfsburg used six substitutions instead of the five sanctioned in the game on 8 August.
"The clubs themselves are responsible for replacements. One of their core duties is to find out replacement options and act accordingly," said Sports Court deputy chairman Stephan Oberholz. "Wolfsburg breached this duty and thus negligently and made a central error by making an illegal sixth substitution to avoid it."
In his debut as Wolfsburg coach, Mark van Bommel made three substitutions against Münster in normal time, then three in extra time and his team drew 1–1 in the final minute. Van Bommel brought in Admir Mehmedi for Maximilian Philipp in his sixth replacement, when the team was still level, less than a minute before his team scored.
Oberholz said Wolfsburg could not blame the mistake on the referee who allowed the substitution because "the central starting error is the club's fault."
The federation said Münster would play in the second round, although Wolfsburg said he was not giving up.
"We do not agree with the decision and will now examine legal options," Wolfsburg chief executive Tim Schumacher said.
Wolfsburg attempted to see the strange side of its mistake on Saturday when it offered fans who bought a sixth ticket for a Bundesliga game against Bochum five free tickets.
