An early Memphis Depay penalty and a Denzel Dumfries goal gave the Netherlands a 2-0 win over Austria on Thursday and a place in the Euro 2020 last 16 as Group C winners.
The Dutch cannot advance to the top of the standings after a second win, while Austria's hopes rest on the result of their last match against Ukraine.
An 11th-minute spot-kick provided an opening platform for the home team and flying full back Dumfries proved to be a popular scorer at the Johan Cruyff Arena as he doubled the tally in as many matches with his second goal in the 67th minute. gave.
Dumfries had netted a dramatic late winner as the Dutch beat Ukraine 3-2 on Sunday, but this time had less of a frenzied experience as they coasted through the match.
He was awarded a penalty after Dumfries was caught on foot by Austrian captain David Alba at the corner of the penalty area. But it was only given when referee Orrell Grinfield consulted the pitchside VAR monitor, with Depay sending a spot-kick powerfully down the diving Daniel Bachman.
Depay had two more first-half chances to add to his tally, hitting the side netting with a snap effort after another mistake from Alaba and conceding a scary miss five minutes before the break.
Attack partner wout Weghorst played a square to the unmarked Depay at the back post, but he accelerated the effort and widened his side-footed effort.
The second goal came when Daniel Malone defeated the offside trap and played selflessly into the charging Dumfries, which ended with enthusiasm by his teammates and the 16,000-strong crowd.
"It's starting to feel like a fairytale. We're really growing, it feels good," Dumfries said.
"We controlled the game and dominated all aspects and deserved to win."
The visiting team's first goal came in the 84th minute, but substitute Karim Onisivo took a straight lead at home goalkeeper Maarten Steckelenberg. Without the suspended Marko Arnatovic, Austria had a state-of-the-art lack in the attack they would need against Ukraine on Monday.
Dutch hosts North Macedonia are at the same time secure in the knowledge that they have already finished in the last 16.
"Overall I am happy with my performance. But we could have done much better in possession", Netherlands manager Frank de Boer said at a news conference.
"We improved defensively, we didn't give as many chances against Ukraine. But it was disappointing how quickly we lost the ball on several occasions. We can do a lot better, but that's good, you don't go over the top Want it very soon."
The Dutch coach said he is not sure how many players will be rested for their final group match against North Macedonia on Monday, which is essentially a dead rubber as their rivals cannot advance to the next round.
"We'll see who needs rest, and who wants to stay in the rhythm of the game," de Boer said. "Having five replacements on hand certainly creates a lot of options."
Wijnaldum warns against complacency now that the first hurdle has been removed.
"Staying already is a bit of a luxury, but we must be aware of the temptation to rest. We have to stay focused, this team needs to work hard to get results," he said.
Austrian coach Franco said that his players rarely took the game to the Dutch, and struggled to make anything into their opponent's box other than a few half-offs.
"We weren't brave enough," he told reporters. "We delivered too many balls very easily and invited him to go into the counter-attack. We created a few chances ourselves but weren't clinical enough to finish them.
"We tried to play around and under the wings instead of getting into the penalty-box. But the opponent played very well, they were always compact and defended well.
"Either we didn't cross or we didn't fire. We weren't determined enough, we lacked purpose. It wasn't enough to move on."
